Off topic, but just to clarify, the Metro wasn't a football conference at all. We, Florida State, and Louisville played as independents. I'm not sure about Virginia Tech, South Carolina, and whoever else was in that conference (Cincinnati surely and it seems like Southern Miss, maybe Tulane). It seems like somebody played football in a conference, South Carolina in the ACC maybe.

RE: Great players that made great coaches
Numerous successful coaches were former players.
Former players know how to be a Players Coach
Can’t imagine anyone being a better Players Coach then Penny
Fortunately he played under Larry who was old school but was still loved by all his players and staff
Penny was taught by the best.

Everybody is different. Just because one is bad or one is good doesn't mean the one to follow has to match the previous.
As Parrish says, the program has 3 problems: money, recruits, on court product.
Penny knocks out 2 of those immediately. The on court product is the big question and if he surrounds himself with the right assistants he can succeed. Hopefully he does.

If he gets the nod, it'll be everybody's hope. The big discussion is more about the probability. What would you have rated Pastner's probability to be a good coach? I remember how gut punched I felt when they announced the hire, but it ended up being not as bad as I thought -- but still not good enough for here. I won't feel anything like that if/when they announce Penny, but I still think the odds are against any coach with no experience at this type of job to be able to succeed well enough to make it here very long.

I think all of the Metro schools played football as an independent.

South Carolina left the ACC in like 1970.
No one in the Metro had football membership to another league.

RE: Great players that made great coaches
Nothing in OP that mentions they had to be NBA coaches. Larry Finch was a great player and a fine coach. Was he perfect? NO but a good coach never the less. His teams played great defense including traps and presses and he wasn't afraid to play a zone. They could shoot free throws among the best teams ever at Memphis.
