10. San Jose State 1-7
9. Bowling Green 1-6
8. Texas State 1-6
7. Kansas 1-5
6. Rice 1-5
5. Baylor 0-6
4. Georgia Southern 0-5
3. UMASS 0-6
2. UTEP 0-7
1. Charlotte 0-7
** Deserves to be in bottom 10, but ran out of space: CCU 1-5 , ECU 1-6, Nevada 1-6 ,
LEGIT WORST TEAM CANDIDATES
The number 1 contenders at this point. All of these teams are in the running for 'worst team'.
1. Charlotte. 0-6 vs FBS and 0-1 vs FCS. Only close loss vs FBS was at a not horrible FIU team. And its not like they've been playing Alabama either.
2. Georgia Southern. 0-4 vs FBS and 0-1 vs FCS. Did actually have a 4th quarter lead vs NMSU (they aren't as bad as their 2-4 record, but they're still 2-4) at home. Otherwise was completely out of every game they played in. Will play UMass next.
3. UTEP. 0-7 vs FBS. A blowout loss to an otherwise winless Rice at home is pretty bad. Many of their opponents are better than average, but other than Oklahoma, none were crazy good, and they got Arizona at home. Played WKU close at home
4. UMass - 0-6 vs FBS. UMass did play a (not good) UT team well on the road. But they've gone winless versus an otherwise winless Coastal Carolina that even has a FCS loss, a bad Hawai'i team who has beaten teams with a combined FBS record of 0-13 other than UMass, an otherwise FBS winless Old Dominion squad, and a couple of 'meh' teams with losing conference records. Its not just that UMass has no wins, but they did so while playing the absolute dregs of FBS. They'll play Ga Southern next to see who is a legit number 1 worst team candidate.
WAITING ROOM - POTENTIAL 'WORST TEAM' CANDIDATES.
Now for the just awful teams (in no order).
Baylor. 0-5 vs FBS, 0-1 vs FCS. Lost to a middling FCS team (Liberty is currently 2-2 in FCS and just lost to a bad St Francis team). Was completely overmatched vs every team they played except for against Oklahoma. Probably could beat UTEP, Ga Southern, or Charlotte at this point just based upon individual talent on the team. They play Kansas, so there's that. But I'm not sure they're going to even be competitive in any other game this year.
Coastal Carolina - 1-4 vs FBS. 0-1 vs FCS. Only win is over legitimate 'worst team' contender UMass. Got blown out at home to a FCS team by 41 points.
Rice 1-5 vs FBS. Only win is over legitimate 'worst team' contender UTEP. Has played a tough schedule but has been absolutely been destroyed in every single other game.
Texas State 0-5 vs FBS. 1-0 vs FCS. Has played a reasonably tough schedule, and outside of their game vs App, has not been in any game in the second half against any FBS team. Will play Coastal to see who might get moved up to the 'worst team' contenders.
San Jose State 0-7 vs FBS 1-0 vs FCS. Has lost every single FBS game by more than 17 points. Has not led any FBS opponent in the second half all year. This is a very, very, very, bad team.
Nevada 1-5 vs FBS 0-1 vs FCS. Owns a loss to a FCS team with a losing record. Beat a 2 FBS win Hawaii team at home (both of their FBS wins have come off of bottom 10 teams). Played Colorado State and Northwestern surprisingly tough.
Bowling Green 1-5 vs FBS, 0-1 vs FCS. Only win was versus a collapsing and not good Miami (OH) squad.
Kent State 1-5 vs FBS 1-0 vs FCS. Win was versus a not good Miami (OH) team
Miami (OH) 1-5 vs FBS 1-0 vs FCS. Only win was over a 3-3 Central Michigan team. Lost to bad teams vs BGSU and Kent. Appears to be collapsing.
Old Dominion 1-4 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. This is a team that might not be as good as its record. Only FBS win was over winless UMass and they've been blown out in pretty much every other game. They've also lost 4 in a row. Probably the worst 2 win team in the country.
Rutgers - 1-4 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. Only FBS win was by 3 points over a bad Eastern Michigan team. I don't see any game going forward where Rutgers should be anything closer than a TD plus underdog.
North Carolina 1-6 vs FBS. Only win was versus a bad Old Dominion team. They do play @Pitt and a FCS at home, so they could get to 3 wins, but its possible they go 1-10 vs FBS this year.
East Carolina 1-5 vs FBS. 0-1 vs FCS. Beat a not really that good UConn squad. Got blown out in every other game, including against a FCS team. This team could possibly beat BYU at home and maybe Cincinnati, but they could just as easily end up 1-11 on the year too.
Kansas 0-5 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. Blown out in every FBS game they've played, including 2 losses to 'meh' MAC teams. This is a bad, bad, bad team. And other than a home game at Baylor, they look likely to lose every other game on their schedule. They will finish either 0-11 or 1-10 vs FBS this year.
BAD RECORD, BUT PROBABLY NOT A CONTENDER FOR WORST TEAM AT THIS TIME. Some of these teams will fall apart, but some are here due to a mismatched schedule. A couple of these teams could actually bowl. In no particular order.
Ball State 1-5 vs FBS 1-0 vs FCS. Only win was over UAB, which isn't that bad of a win. Has lost 3 straight games though. They have a couple of games that they could win going forward. They're probably out of contention for a bowl though.
South Alabama 1-4 vs FBS 1-0 vs FCS. Only FBS win was over Troy on the road. Brutal schedule of @Miss, Okla State, @La Tech, and Idaho. Only Idaho could be remotely considered a 'bad loss' and it wasn't that bad of a loss. The schedule going forward is a lot more favorable. A bowl at this point isn't likely, but its certainly possible.
Pitt 1-5 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. Only FBS win versus a horrendous Rice team. Has played some games close while losing. They won't be bowling, but they could win a game or two going forward. They play UNC at home.
Idaho 1-4 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. Only FBS win was over South Alabama. Has played some teams close though. A bowl is still possible, but unlikely at this point. But with a remaining schedule of @Mizzou, ULM, @Troy, Coastal, @NMSU, and @Ga State, they're probably not done winning. Only problem....only 2 home games left.
Cincinnati 1-5 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. Has played a nasty schedule, but their only FBS win is versus a bad Miami (OH) team. Has not led against any FBS team they've played other than Miami (OH) in the 2nd half this year. But the schedule has been brutal, so I'll leave them outside the waiting room for now. They'll be favored in at least 2 remaining games. A bowl would be unlikely though.
UConn 1-5 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. Only FBS win is over Temple. Lost at home to East Carolina in a game they never led and in a way that was much worse than the final score. This is a bad football team. The win over Temple gets them out of the waiting room for now, but I suspect they'll end up right back in it. They're not going to a bowl unless they pull off some monster upsets going forward.
BYU - 0-6 vs FBS 1-0 vs FCS. Rough schedule, but 0-6 is still 0-6. Schedule eases up significantly, so I'll wait for a second bad loss (or two more 'good' losses) before moving them up. Their remaining schedule is 'hot garbage' with @ECU, San Jose, @Fresno, @UNLV, @Hawai'i, and UMass. They could conceivably win all those games. But, BYU must win 7 games to bowl as they play a 13 game regular season. We will know soon enough if they're really a 'worst team' or a 'contender'.
Missouri 0-5 vs FBS 1-0 vs FCS. Got blown out in every game but their game at Kentucky. Rough schedule but 0-5 is 0-5 They have a chance to 'earn' their way into the bottom teams in their next 2 games vs Idaho and at UConn. Lose both of them and they'll be in the bottom 5 for sure.
Arkansas 1-4 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. Only FBS win over NMSU. They did take Texas A&M to OT, so I'll leave them here for the time being. I suspect they'll beat Coastal, Ole Miss, and Missouri. Add an upset at home versus Miss State, and they could still bowl.
Oregon State 0-6 vs FBS, 1-0 vs FCS. The schedule is slightly easier going forward, but they could really lose all their remaining games. This team ain't bowling, but probably will upset someone this year.
