Position Grades BC
From what I read in the Tribune, Graham is Carey's guy. So, barring injury, we'd better get used to him. Carey was sold on Graham earlier in practice but kept the competition going anyway.

Which essentially doesn't make it a competition. Seriously though, I would not want Rod Carey within 2 miles of my son if he was a high school QB. Eats them up, spits them out, then flushes them down the garbage disposal.

It could be a lot worse. We are just...pretty mediocre it seems.

QB-C-

Kids got heart. Kids got no arm.

RB-B

We were playing a stout front 7. I didn't anticipate that we'd be very productive on the ground..and we weren't. Carey really hates Huff, huh? Marcus Jones looked good though

WR-C+

This group is going to be very under-whelming, but mildly reliable, I feel. Beebe looks like a dude that's going to put up solid numbers. Great to see Tears out there running with the 1's. You can see some flashes. DJ Brown was the MVP of the group. Blake needs to be the guy...unfortunately he just couldn't separate tonight. Bummer Wesley dropped that one...I was hoping he'd break out tonight.

OL-B

They had a tough test tonight and held up. Nothing super impressive but they did what they needed to do to give the playmakers a chance. They are going to be the unit that carries us.

TE-C+

Wimann drop on the wheel was brutal. Loved the playcalls to him on the TD and the 4th down conversion.

DL-B

The Sutton Smith coming out party. He's all things NIU. Under-sized but quick, instinctive and plays with a motor. Interior did a fine job.

LB-B+

It was also the Kyle Pugh party. That dude was around the ball all game. Juwan Johnson was flying around anticipating some plays too.

DB-C+

Overall the group was fine. Would have been a D if the BC QB had any touch on a deep ball. We were toasted a few times and got away with it. Lurry is going to drive me nuts all seaso, I can already tell.

ST-B

Hagan's final kick was a bummer. But hey, we've got a punter! Great ability to ge the ball to turnover pretty consistently. Beebe back is refreshing. I'm cool with Blake not returning kicks. Would have loved if those were in Huff's hands. Coverage was pretty decent.

Coaching-D

The way he handled the end of both halves was completely ridiculous. Ended up costing us the game.

Fan base-D

WTF has happened to us? It's flat out embarrassing.

Disagree on a couple grades...linebackers at B+ is probably a little low.

Quarterback= F 15 of 38 when almost all are high percentage passes going no more than a few yards downfield??? And, the line gave him pretty good time.

Coaching= F I just rewatched two critical points of the game. In the first half, BC scored to make it 10-6. NIU got the ball back with 1:59 on the clock. The BC coach called three quick timeouts and NIU punted with 1:41 left of the clock (three plays, 18 seconds!). BC got the ball back, scored a TD and led at half.

At the end of the game---with 1:20 left, Graham ran a keeper on first down and lost a yard...was tackled at 1:15....NIU got to the line and looked at the bench--they snapped that ball at 0:47. It took TWENTY EIGHT seconds to get the play in when you are DOWN in the game. Absolute joke! THEN to compound it on that play Graham completes a crossing pattern to Beebe who is tackled immediately and the whistle blows at 0:41. Carey calls timeout at 0:31!!! TEN SECONDS to call a timeout!!!

OK---I just gave the QB an F...but if NIU would have gotten one more first down, I just accounted for somewhere between 30 and 38 seconds of WASTED time and TERRIBLE clock management.

Let me add here--that IF, when inside the 30 with a minute to go, they were playing for the FG (which I am sure isn't the case)--the coach should be fired before he hits the locker room.

Sorry for the rant, but this is stuff that average fans (which I am) can do in their sleep.

+1

The BC TD at the end of the half won the game. Besides the points it was also a momentum swing as they went to the locker room.

It wasn't an F because I thought both coordinators called a good game, sand a few bad calls. U worked with what he had in graham agaisnt a great D. Moved the pocket. Used the TE well. We saw him go into the bag of tricks. People are killing the QB draw late but if you go back and watch, it was there and could have easily gone for 10-15, It just developed a spilt second too late.

I don't care that the coordinators called a good game. I pointed out two critical points of the game---the end of the first half and the end of the second half when the management of the game and the clock were solely in the head coach's hands. Both scenarios, in my estimation, were poorly managed and had a much larger effect on the final outcome of the game than any play call at any other point of the game. This is not a one time event----this is a trend. MD--help me out here, brother.

And if Santa were running the play it would've broke open because Santa is a much, much better runner. And based on what I saw Friday and all of last season, I'm pretty confident Santa will develop into a much better passer than Graham in a matter of a couple games. Based on what I saw last year, Santa is a gamer -- Graham is not.

RE: Position Grades BC
i Would grade the D's overall performance a very solid B+ almost an A considering how much time they had to spend on the field to make up for an offense that could not move the ball consistently.

GIve the O line a very sold B if not B+, they did very well considering that qualify of the competition they faced. BC has at least 1 first team all ACC DE and they didn't get to Graham until the 4th quarter.

WR's a C at best, not that Graham was that accurate but way too many dropped passes by Beebe and Wyman. Help our your QB for crying out loud. O line also faced a larger Defensive team and over all did very well IMO

Sutton Smith is a stud he has 1st team all MAC written all over him. If he spend any more time in BC;s backfield he would have been wearing an Eagle jersey. Defense was on point and hit hard.

This game was lost because of the coaching staff and play calling pure and simple. A real shame

Dropped passes by Beebe?? Obviously, we didn't watch the same game. He played great. As for Wyman, he is the best TE we have had here in a long time. Yes, he didn't have his usual great performance but he did score a TD and had a HUGE play down the stretch on 4th down to give us a chance to win. Keep up the great work guys!!!

Just curious how the end of the half sequence is viewed as bad coaching. We ran the ball three times to make them use their timeouts, which is what about 90% of coaches would do in that situation, especially when your passing game is not very good. If we pass and it's incomplete we stop the clock and save them a timeout. Give BC credit for stopping our run and using their timeouts.

I think it's just the fact that it was 3 straight up the gut runs. You could have still had 3 runs, but gone wide with 1 of them. Or 2 runs and a RB screen. 3 straight up the guts kind of signals - we arent really trying to get a first down - which is fan speak for quitting. But yeah, sometimes you cant win with fans. guys mad about doing the obvious with those 3 runs, but mad about not doing the obvious and running wide at the end of the game.

Is running the ball 3 times to force them to use their time outs really the "obvious" coaching move? If I remember, BC got the ball back with 2 minutes left in good field position. When the clock stops for first downs to move the chains, who needs timeouts in that situation?? It was a bad play calling sequence and everyone in the stands knew it hence the boos at the end.

We were only up by 4. We had all three time outs and over 2 minutes. Run your offense and try to at least get a FG. They wasted an opportunity and gave BC the ball back with excellent field position.

Obvious only in the sense of being conservative right before the end of the half, deep in your own end with a lead. If I had to guess, the thought was to run it twice up the middle and get a third and short which gives you a lot of play options. And if you end up in third and long you just cut bait and go safe. Jones got 4 yards on the first run. That's a success. So to run it again isn't really a bad call. But he only got 1 yard. With the way Graham was throwing, the third run was sort of the white flag play. At some point you have to put some faith in your O line and RB to make a first down even when the defense is keying on the run. I'm not saying I like the calls, but it's not outlandish. Graham really limits your choices.

When you don't have great speed like NIU at WR , doesn't good route running become more important. Receivers cannot get much separation and I don't understand why you run just plain speed routes when it's not your advantage. Carey would just prefer you throw it 20 yards past your receiver running a streak than miscommunicate on any type of real route. At some point rod Carey has to trust the people he puts on the field. The coaching scared thing imo has become very toxic

I get the many deep routes. Make BC pay for press coverage. But I dont get sending Blake and Beebe deep as they both have only average speed. Maybe the BC corners are really fast too? IDK. Maybe its just that they are your best receivers and can adjust to the ball and win body position battles? But Graham has to give them a chance. I still havent looked at the video so I cant really say what kind of other deep or intermediate routes they were trying. Id rather go down swinging with Santa next week. How much worse could he possibly be??????????

Congrats Badmoon. You too have made the Block/Ignore list. My life will be better without reading your ridiculous and negative thoughts.

You're an idiot. Obviously, Graham can't create enough plays for us to win. He has proven that again and again and most of us on this board said it. EIU will beat us unless our defense can have their way with them and and running game blisters them. If we have to rely on Graham at all we'll lose just like we lost to WIU last year.

Beebe did have a great game. He was clutch but he did have a sideline 3rd down pass go through both hands. Would have been a first down. He would make that catch 8 or 9 times out of 10.

Yea, Beebe had a drop, and Wimann, and I forget who else. So that would make Graham something like 18 for 38. Which still sucks. Just means that WRs don't get a pass either.
