Position Grades BC
BC might be mediocre...at best. You can't piss away those kind of opportunities to get a G5 skin. With that said, it works out to an exhibition game and at least there is some positives. Defense looks formidable which means we should be in all 12 games we play. It could be a lot better. It could be a lot worse. We are just...pretty mediocre it seems.

QB-C-

Kids got heart. Kids got no arm.

RB-B

We were playing a stout front 7. I didn't anticipate that we'd be very productive on the ground..and we weren't. Carey really hates Huff, huh? Marcus Jones looked good though

WR-C+

This group is going to be very under-whelming, but mildly reliable, I feel. Beebe looks like a dude that's going to put up solid numbers. Great to see Tears out there running with the 1's. You can see some flashes. DJ Brown was the MVP of the group. Blake needs to be the guy...unfortunately he just couldn't separate tonight. Bummer Wesley dropped that one...I was hoping he'd break out tonight.

OL-B

They had a tough test tonight and held up. Nothing super impressive but they did what they needed to do to give the playmakers a chance. They are going to be the unit that carries us.

TE-C+

Wimann drop on the wheel was brutal. Loved the playcalls to him on the TD and the 4th down conversion.

DL-B

The Sutton Smith coming out party. He's all things NIU. Under-sized but quick, instinctive and plays with a motor. Interior did a fine job.

LB-B+

It was also the Kyle Pugh party. That dude was around the ball all game. Juwan Johnson was flying around anticipating some plays too.

DB-C+

Overall the group was fine. Would have been a D if the BC QB had any touch on a deep ball. We were toasted a few times and got away with it. Lurry is going to drive me nuts all seaso, I can already tell.

ST-B

Hagan's final kick was a bummer. But hey, we've got a punter! Great ability to ge the ball to turnover pretty consistently. Beebe back is refreshing. I'm cool with Blake not returning kicks. Would have loved if those were in Huff's hands. Coverage was pretty decent.

Coaching-D

The way he handled the end of both halves was completely ridiculous. Ended up costing us the game.

Fan base-D

WTF has happened to us? It's flat out embarrassing.

I think we lost our swagger because the coach is not likeable, no star players, and ****** game times/dates.

Addazio went with the younger, more athletic QB and Cary went with "experience." Not good experience mind you but experience. Santa would have made a lot more plays with his legs and created more wide open passing situations. We have a much better chance of becoming a serviceable offense with Santa playing and improving. We are just a sucky, sucky offense with Graham.

At least Carey is a warm likable coach like Novak or Kill....07-coffee3

Too kind; more like a mediocre high school QB when Graham misses receivers so badly.

And most of us knew this about Graham already. It's sad that it was so predictable. Carey also blew it by continually having Graham try to throw long even though he proved all night that he was not capable of hitting long throws. Cost us the game.

I thought our linebackers were awesome last night. Might be the best linebacking core we have had in years! Pugh had 17 tackles and a pick. Jones had 16 tackles and Johnson was great as well. Loved our front 7 last night. BC tempo was ridiculous and the defense was opportunistic. Smith is a stud! If we can hold opposing teams in the MAC to 20 points we may be able to overcome the inept play calling before the half and at the end of the game.

Grades were about right - offensive playmakers did not make enough plays. Thtabwill be the storyline this year. OLine looked as good as I have seen inn a long time.
Coaching? We did not lose because of coaching. The play calling was well thought out and I would grade a B+ / A- . The understand what their players are capable of doing. It's a very conservative passing attack since the QB does not have a strong arm. We will end up playing 4 QBs this year.

I thought the O-line did a nice job against BC. And we appear to have found a punter. Defense did pretty well, though we don't know how good BC's offense is at this point. There were some nice open field tackles out there.

At critical points, where a few more yards would have given us better FG position or a first down, we tried to throw long with a QB that does not have a strong arm or accuracy for long throws, which killed some of the drives. That was coaching.

RE: Position Grades BC
The great news is the front 7. The secondary was bad last night, but that group should be ok. The defense is going to be really good as we suspected. The front 7's play solidifies that.

Other great news, the O-line looked really good. Once we can establish a run vs lesser defenses, the entire O will pick up.

The non-Graham bad news is the WR group. No one looked like a true #1. But we knew that.

It stinks we blew this game and mostly that Graham has not only NOT improved, hes gotten worse. But we have a history of our offense struggling vs bigger Defenses. This year is still about MAC play. Next week will be a great chance to establish some offense. The defense has said its here to play.

Disagree on a couple grades...linebackers at B+ is probably a little low.

Quarterback= F 15 of 38 when almost all are high percentage passes going no more than a few yards downfield??? And, the line gave him pretty good time.

Coaching= F I just rewatched two critical points of the game. In the first half, BC scored to make it 10-6. NIU got the ball back with 1:59 on the clock. The BC coach called three quick timeouts and NIU punted with 1:41 left of the clock (three plays, 18 seconds!). BC got the ball back, scored a TD and led at half.

At the end of the game---with 1:20 left, Graham ran a keeper on first down and lost a yard...was tackled at 1:15....NIU got to the line and looked at the bench--they snapped that ball at 0:47. It took TWENTY EIGHT seconds to get the play in when you are DOWN in the game. Absolute joke! THEN to compound it on that play Graham completes a crossing pattern to Beebe who is tackled immediately and the whistle blows at 0:41. Carey calls timeout at 0:31!!! TEN SECONDS to call a timeout!!!

OK---I just gave the QB an F...but if NIU would have gotten one more first down, I just accounted for somewhere between 30 and 38 seconds of WASTED time and TERRIBLE clock management.

Let me add here--that IF, when inside the 30 with a minute to go, they were playing for the FG (which I am sure isn't the case)--the coach should be fired before he hits the locker room.

Sorry for the rant, but this is stuff that average fans (which I am) can do in their sleep.

It was the clock management...it was awful. Then to play for the tie and not the win?!!?? Seriously, we had timeouts and therefore could have utilized a balanced approach to score a td, but we burnt clock and played to tie....which we didn't 03-puke

I have never coached, so I'm ingnorant, but I was in shock how that was handled

I thought the O-Line was fantastic in pass protection. It was a good strategy rolling the pocket on many pass plays. However, throwing on the run is obviously not Graham's strong suit. He'll be a lot better when we don't play front 7's like BC when he doesn't have to rush to get rid of the ball and can set his feet to make throws.

Fans need to realize that Graham won the preseason QB battle. If Santa was better he would be leading the team. No disrepect to the young mam learning his craft but he had troubles throwing with accuracy and being consistent reading rhe defense. Qb is really hard and it takes practice reps to get better. Santa is young and learning and will get time to improve. I expect him to get some playing time next week. Hoping he does well.
