RE: DEDICATION DATE SET FOR DIESEL MEMORIAL SCULPTURE
[quote='Stpetebeachrocketfan' pid='14515448' [/quote]
Thanks Rocket Fan, pretty unusual to get donations like this from a fan of another program.
My NIU/Toledo history goes back to the early 70s and the Chuck Ealey era. Chuck was an outstanding QB in the MAC and the CFL. It was a joy to watch him play and a shame that he is not in the College Football Hall of Fame. Back then it was pretty much impossible for a MAC player to qualify.

RE: DEDICATION DATE SET FOR DIESEL MEMORIAL SCULPTURE
Is there going to be any fundraising done at the games? Either walking around or at a set spot, or two. Will NIU allow any fundraising on the grounds?

NIU asked us to change our original dedication date of the Diesel Memorial sculpture & we have all agreed on Oct. 26, 2017 before the EMU game. Before anyone mentions that it is a weeknight etc. etc. please know that we needed a date that the entire committee as well as our artist, Renee Bemis, and other NIU dignitaries could all attend. 10/26/17 was the date that worked.
The committee is made up of 4 people plus our artist and we are pretty spread out with HuskieBob in Florida & me a couple hours away. Logistics sometimes were tricky to get this memorial completed but with the dedication of everyone it is happening!
I re-read the original Diesel Memorial thread and the very first post of the thread from NIU Drew pretty much started this whole thing. NIU Drew has not posted or been active on the board since 9/26/2015. I don't know where he is or if he will see this but I want to convey my heartfelt thanks to him for his genuine caring he showed with his post. It is the spirit of the Diesel Memorial & the inspiration that got this ball rolling ...soon to be a reality.
NIU Drew posted 9/15/15 "I was really sad to hear the news about Diesel. He brought a lot of joy to fans at the stadium and watching on TV. It seems like every game broadcast, both local and national, the crew commented on the beautiful dog named Diesel. He was there for almost all of NIU’s rise to prominence as a mid-major power, and absolutely deserves a spot in the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame. He was the one constant during those years which saw various coaches, athletic directors, and players cycle through the program. He even provided the most shared NIU sports moment in history with his signature high five.
Some have mentioned a statue. I don’t know the feasibility in terms of donors, but I would love to see a statue of Diesel in front of the West side where everyone walks by -- one that is low to the ground in his signature high five pose. Kids would be high-fiving him back and having photo opportunities every Saturday for years.
We will miss you, buddy. I hope you are rollin in the snow somewhere on the other side."
Here too is the list of people who pledged a donation. Thanks to all of you for your generosity! If you pledged & forgot you did, we sure could use your donation as we are still fund raising. As always, please tell your NIU friends & family about the project. It has taken some time but we are almost there! Go Huskies!

RE: DEDICATION DATE SET FOR DIESEL MEMORIAL SCULPTURE
Could the shirt be created, with approval from the U, as a one time fundraising strategy? Buy a ton of them low and sell them for double. More options might turn into more money. Instead of just asking people to donate, give them options. If there is a stand or something, there's a good chance a few people might toss a few bucks into a donation can. However, the door would be open for more to donate/ each donor to give more if they get something tangible in return. Finally, some people who aren't interested in donating might just buy the shirt because it's cool (that's still money towards the project)?
Disregard if this idea was already kicked around. I donated and then have only followed the project via the email update i receive.

That is awesome. Thanks so much!
I would not have come to this game myself but we had to have a game when all of us on the committee could attend (HuskieBob is in FL so he has to fly back) that also worked with NIU. maybe we will luck out & have balmy nice weather. I hope so.
It will be our last game for the season that my sons & I attend probably.

It is very difficult to get approval with the Collegiate licensing issues to even get the shirt made once. ( the logistics of the problems are over my pay grade!) I agree it would be very cool to have the shirts to sell but it's too complicated to have it happen.
We have reached a critical point now. The sculpture is complete at the foundry & a date of Oct. 26, 2017 has been set for the dedication. The sculpture must be installed prior to the dedication - that means pouring the concrete base, anchoring it, anchoring the sculpture to the base, installing a plaque and a few other things. All of that installation takes money. We must pay for all of that as well as pay the final cost of the sculpture.
It is my hope that people who have not donated yet will still step up and make a donation to the cause. The reward is a beautiful remembrance of a much loved mascot and the opportunity to have fun and high five with him for generations to come. I believe that people will be blown away by this sculpture when they see it . It is VERY cool!
I look forward to seeing many people on facebook & NIU Media services showing pics of people high fiving with Diesel...their kids high fiving with Diesel. :-)

NIURanger - here is a current pic of the sculpture - taken in July. It just needed to have patina applied to it then. Article from the Northern Star.

What happens if we don't get that much money by then? After all this time we seem to be well short of the original goal.
