The ACC has a pretty sweet deal with local channels in NC... you can typcially find either the UNC, NC State, Duke, or Wake game on a local channel every Saturday. ECU is almost never on one of those...

Agreed. Unless you're East of Raleigh or in the tidewater area of Virginia, it's a pretty mixed bag. Definitely lots of ACC on in Raleigh and Charlotte.

Largest county for ECU alumni outside of Pitt County is Wake County home of Raleigh and NC State. Huge ECU following in Wake County. Fortunately, while not on local networks cable subscribers have ESPN in their lineup. Ratings numbers in recent years for ECU football outperforms NCSU football in the state of NC. Nielsen system is subjective/political. If you add Wake County to ECU's DMA we vault to number 19 nationally. People believe it or not watch ECU football outside of Pitt County while Raleigh's DMA begins at the Pitt County (home of ECU) line which is a joke!!!!

I hear y'all talking about markets? NIU happens to be located within a pretty massive TV market not yet penetrated by the AAC 03-wink

RE: AAC markets
WSU does not have the largest market. It does deliver that market, which is nice. But WSU's revenue-generation potential for this conference is not based that heavily in TV market. There are some TV implications with improving national basketball telecasts, but that isn't really even related to the WSU market. WSU's revenue generation potential is from NCAA tourney share distribution. Getting into the tourney. Advancing in the tourney. And helping raise the overall basketball profile of the conference such that another additional team or two is also getting in to the tourney. These things don't equal the media deal football brings in, but WSU isn't taking a full share of that payout either.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I quickly ranked the metro areas by population for each AAC school. I'm not saying each school delivers their market but it is their base. Interesting to note the two schools with loudest/most annoying/vocal fans come from the two smallest markets.....

AAC rank - metro area (metro pop, US metro rank)

1. SMU - DFW (7,200,000 4th)
2. UH - Houston (6,800,000 5th)
3. Temple - Philly (6,100,000 7th)
4. USF - Tampa (3,000,000 18th)
5. Navy - Baltimore/Annapolis (2,700,000 21st)
6. UCF - Orlando (2,500,000 23rd)
7. Cincy - Cincinnati (2,200,000 28th)
8. Memphis - Memphis (1,300,000 42nd)
9. Tulane - New Orleans (1,300,000 46th)
10. UConn - Hartford (1,200,000 47th)
11. Tulsa - Tulsa (1,000,000 55th)
12. WSU - Wichita (600,000 87th)
13. ECU - Greenville, NC (200,000 236th)

Also, I included Annapolis in the Baltimore metro.

A more important marker is TV market. That is what brings in the money for a conference. However, I will say that the Orlando market can include Daytona Beach and Melbourne as that is where our local TV coverage extends. Tampa should probably include St Pete, Sarasota, and stretch into Polk County. I am sure there are others in similar circumstances. For whatever reason, the official numbers don't include them.
http://www.nielsen.com/content/dam/corpo...-ranks.pdf

1. Temple - Philly (2,942,800 4th)
2. SMU - DFW (2,713,380 5th)
3. UH - Houston (2,450,800 8th)
4. USF - Tampa (1,908,590 11th)
5. UCF - Orlando (1,519,570 18th)
6. Navy - Baltimore/Annapolis (1,119,480 26th)
7. UConn - Hartford (963,950 30th)
8. Cincy - Cincinnati (863,800 36th)
9. Tulane - New Orleans (641,620 50th)
10. Memphis - Memphis (633,930 51st)
11. Tulsa - Tulsa (531,230 58th)
12. WSU - Wichita (439,760 66th)
13. ECU - Greenville, NC (301,990 100th)

I still say Jackson TN should be included in the Memphis TV market....ranked 176 with 89,970...It would bump Memphis over the 720k mark.

might as well include little rock

nah...they can keep it.

Little Rock is 140 miles from Memphis...Jackson TN is 64

Cincy is trying to get Dayton OH...if they get Dayton, I want Jackson.
For your consideration...the GSU market map and oh yeah it's pronounced MARKETZ![Image: 9fe33dd190dfdea7600a2da7c616e859.jpg]

Not a joke. It literally does.

Not sure why he's laughing.... The joke is TV markets and who gets to claim them. UNC, Duke, and NCSU can claim Farmville which is 8 miles from ECU, but ECU can't claim any traction in RDU where its largest concentration of alumni live.... Markets matter sure, but the influence is diminishing rapidly with streaming and a la carte TV. Ultimately its going to be about who gets people to buy the station and turn on the TV. Not just the arbitrary number of households in your market.
Streaming doesn't change anything. You will still have local advertising. Who is watching where still will matter.
