RE: OT: Ohio state head coach Thad Matta let go
Justin Ahrens (3 star) has already announced he is reopening his recruiting. Dayton and Duquesne have already jumped in with offers.

Within the State of Cincinnati we don't get all the recruits, but we rarely lose them to OSU. The only Cincy-area recruit that Ohio State signed in the past 15 years was Jordan Sibert.

Micks vs Thad's Ohio Recruits since 2007

Mick Cronin
Yancey Gates 4 star
Jaron Cumberland 4 star
Kevin Johnson 3 star

Thad Matta
Jared Sullinger 5 star
BJ Mullens 5 star

William Buford 5 star
Kosta Koufos 5 star
Jordan Sibert 4 star
Jon Diebler 4 star
Aaron Craft 4 star
JD Weatherspoon 4 star
Derek Funderburk 4 star
Kaleb Wesson 4 star
Dane Goodwin 4 star

AJ Harris 4 star
Jaesean Tate 4 star
Marc Loving 4 star
Dave Bell 3 star
Micah Potter 3 star
Andre Wesson 3 star

Justin Ahrens 3 star

Its not even close. Thad has been outrecruiting Mick his entire time, especially for Ohio guys.

Thanks for agreeing with me. Jordan Siebert is the only Cincinnati-area guy that Matta got.

UC has rarely recruited the rest of Ohio for basketball - it may as well be a different state, and it's not exactly a hotbed for basketball talent anyways.

What??? Listed above is four 5-star and ten 4-star players from Ohio on OSU's roster. So you're telling me Mick doesn't care about those players?? He'd rather go after some three star talent from New York or Texas? That's ludicrous. That's a ton of Ohio talent that Mick would love to have. Mick goes after guys he feels he can get and that's the reason he wasn't actively recruiting many of these players.

Of that list, a vast majority of kids are Columbus area natives (Bolded)...we're not getting them AND that's over 10 years worth of recruits. I think he is basically saying that we do not recruit the same kind of kids (Goodwin, Koufos, Wesson, Loving, Diebler, etc.) that Matta did and we maintain a pretty significant hold on the Cincinnati area in recruiting battles against OSU. That has been a point of contention here for quite some time, and I agree that Mick seems to undershoot on the recruiting trail, but we all know that. He turns average guys into the players he wants rather than getting kids with bad tendencies and mentalities. It's who he is...now do I agree with that? No...but I also know he has been doing it for 10 years with some significant success. Keep in mind that a vast majority of those kids were recruited when OSU was competing for NT's and Final Fours. If we can get there I think we would be able to compete with them for recruits occasionally, but OSU is the mothership much like football. When they're good, they can get who they want in the state and leave the scraps to us.

Surprised this hasn't been brought up, but per the Cols. Dispatch, Bob Huggins is high on OSU's list.

Can't see Huggy going to O$U in a million years. He fits much better at WVU than in Columbus. Don't think Huggy would want to play second fiddle to Urban Meyer, either.

I would not put anything past Huggins, but hard to see anyone throwing a bunch of money at someone his age with his health and upkeep. They just canned a guy 14 years younger with a health issue. However, living in Morgantown can't be good not to mention the b12 trips which i understand he absolutely hates.

No way Huggs or Cronin are high on their list...this is Sh:tpatch's way of reminding everyone that O$U could take them if they wanted to. Mack, however, could be real.

I could be wrong, so file this under the "never say never" heading, but it would take more than they are willing to get Mack. He hates OSU, like many here do. He could move on if offered the right job, but he is very comfortable where he is at and OSU is not going to back up the Brinks truck to get him.

@goodmanESPN: Ohio State has offered job to Creighton’s Greg McDermott, source told ESPN. Two sides met tonight.

Hmm. I wouldn't call that a splash necessarily.

Oh man, please let OSU hire McDermott. He's not a bad coach, but he's definitely a downgrade from Thad Matta.

McDermott would be a pretty vanilla hire. He's solid, but not what OSU fans are looking for. Huggins is near retirement, I highly doubt he would be wanting to take the OSU job and vice versa

Ohio State has made a huge impact without "sexy" hires. Tressell, and Matta were not sexy here in Columbus when they were hired, but they worked out very well. McDermott may be able to do a lot with OSU's budget. That being said... I hope he continues Thad's slide to basketball mediocrity.

Tressell and Matta are a bit different though. While Tressell was not a sexy pick on a national level, he was sexy within Ohio-- particularly Northeast Oho where he was already a big deal long before he put on the scarlet and gray sweater vest. His northeastern roots/support really aided him with recruiting within Ohio and IMHO increase OSU's already rabid following in the northern part of the state. Matta already was established in the region with big runs at Butler and XU.

McDermott does not have the same dynamics working for him. I see more Jim O'Brien in this potential hire than Jim Tressell or Matta.

I'm sure it's no secret in basketball coaching circles that football will always be the reigning king in Columbus, no matter how roundball prospers. Top of market pay for the coach, great facilities, excellent conference for certain. But the job simply doesn't have the sizzle of a UNC, Kansas, Kentucky or UCLA.

So McDermott may well be their last, best option. One would think they had their man already selected when they cut Matta loose.

To Creighton's credit, they have passionate fans packing that arena every night in Omaha. He better be prepared for fans in football jerseys with lots of others disguised as empty seats most nights at Value City.

Latest from Columbus Dispatch

Smith did travel to Omaha, Nebraska, where it’s believed he met with McDermott, but he returned to Columbus early Thursday without him. Upon his arrival, Smith told The Dispatch that no deal is complete for a new coach and that he is still working through a long list of candidates. Smith refused to say who was on the list because of confidentiality.

Before the search settled on McDermott, one person believed to be under consideration was Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg. He shot down the notion he would return to the college ranks in a statement to the Chicago Tribune.

Current Ohio State assistant Chris Jent interviewed with Smith on Wednesday afternoon, multiple sources told The Dispatch. Other candidates being considered include West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams and Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown. All were confirmed to The Dispatch by multiple sources as under consideration to some degree.

On Wednesday evening, sources were indicating that Smith would head to Cleveland today to talk with Brown.

The Dispatch learned that Arizona’s Sean Miller and Xavier’s Chris Mack had rejected overtures from OSU.

Given my distaste for the NBA...Nothing would please me more than all the Cavs-Buckeye fans having to deal with Mike Brown as the head coach.

WOW! Count me among those who said that Gene Smith must have had a whale lined up and ready to go to do a mid-Summer firing. I'm wrong. This has quickly turned into an utter cluster**** for OSU. Enjoy!

So true--it may be a highly entertaining search to watch from a safe distance.

We'll know it's not going well when Smith charters a flight to Greenville, NC to interview the ECU coach.
