No surprise--- he's had a bad back for several years that has kept him off his feet.

The million dollar question is who will be Gargamel's replacement. I thought Archie Miller would have been the logical choice but the Buckeyes did not pull the trigger this year.

Is this the job that gets Mack out of this town?

I was surprised he stayed for the upcoming season.

If extended he would take it IMHO. OSU has more money than they know what to do with. Games are broadcasted on the big networks vs. FS1 so there is plenty of exposure. Just a two hour drive to visit friends and family here in the Queen City.

Matta may toe the party line at today's announcement but we are hearing this was not his choice

That's what some people I know within the AD at OSU have been saying to me for a few years. He was apparently very much against the idea, but after last season they basically said "we're giving you a year then you're done" and he could choose to leave gracefully or be let go.

Yep, with their money I'm surprised they're giving him another season. Some suggested he was a lame duck this year and now another year of recruiting will be compromised. Of course it doesn't break my heart but it's questionable timing for sure.

Wow. Worst possible exit scenario for the bucknuts. With no successor in waiting and program in the dumps, this pretty much kills recruiting for at least one more year and probably two. If they don't make a home run hire, I can see that program in the garbage for awhile.

My guess is they go after Billy D. The Bazely decompression makes more sense now

I've never minded Matta much, especially the more I learned about him as a person - he's overcome quite a bit of health issues, and from all accounts seems to be a decent guy. Crazy ending for Ohio State's all-time leader in wins.

I'm not at all worried, but is there even a remote chance they will be interested in Cronin?

Gene Smith now makes it clear this wasn't Matta's call. Said last Friday, "Thad, maybe it's time for us to make a leadership change."

Stewart Mandel‏Verified account @slmandel 4m4 minutes ago
As of end of season, Smith was on board with Matta coming back. After seeing how poorly recruiting was going, not anymore. "It was time."

...and there it is.

I did love having OSU basketball in the doldrums. It should not be hard for a competent coach to turn OSU around. Here's to hoping that they find their version of Tommy Tubberville.

News Flash: Ohio State fires head men's basketball coach.

Reaction From OSU fans: "We have a men's basketball team?"

Personal opinion warning here...

It's not like we're going to capitalize on this when it comes to recruiting. Mick isn't going to start outrecruiting OSU, despite us being the historically better program. Best case scenario is that OSU hires Mack and Xavier finally hires a dud, and we become the uncontested #2 profile program in Ohio, with a shot at #1 depending on the Mack/OSU fit. Worst case scenario is that OSU makes a home run hire of someone else, and we then drop to a distant #3 in coaching ability AND recruiting within the state. IMO, we are currently #3 in recruiting behind Xavier and OSU, but #2 in coaching behind Xavier. I realize that OSU's 2017 class is ranked lower than ours on 247, but they also brought in half as many players... Their average rating was almost 91 compared to our 87.

I'm not going to consider the notion of OSU hiring Cronin, because... well... he doesn't "seem like their type."

All just my opinion.

Also I hope they don't go after Gregg Marshall. It seems like the dream hire according to their fan base is Billy Donovan. Obviously he would do great there.

Not sure if Thamel is pulling this out of his ass or this is some kind of legit list of people that OSU is talking to. I think the process may have started a couple of weeks ago while OSU and Matta's lawyers worked out the details of his exit.

Follows the M-O, go after an ex-Florida coach who left the college game then win multiple national titles.
