It's on his list but the list is so jumbled that it's hard to find one you might be looking for. I don't see Marquette on the list but it might be there. They used to be a regular on Wisconsin's schedule.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the answer is their non-football sports would all be in the exact same conference their non-football teams play in now, and their football teams would be in an FCS football only conferences like the MVFC or pioneer league.

So for example Bradley would probably be similar to how Drake University ended up. The non-football sports would play in the MVC. The football team would be an FCS non-scholarship program playing in a midwest version of the pioneer league.

It's actually an interesting hypothetical, but the problem is that DavidSt throws just a massive, unorganized list (directly from wikipedia) out there that comes as just a wall of crazy text. I mean, no one can sort through all that. I'm not sure if the expectation is to come up with a conference for each one of those 100 or so schools from DI-NAIA...

Anyways, it's interesting enough of a question, so how about if I do some weed-whacking and propose a more manageable and relevant list:

What conferences do you think these football programs would be in today if they were still around and what would those conferences look like?

Boston U
Pacific
Cal State Fullerton
Long Beach State
Wichita State

Boston University football would likely be in the Patriot League. Only Army and Navy have football elsewhere from that conference.

Pacific, Cal State Fullerton, and Long Beach St - maybe we still have a WAC? Those 3 + San Jose St, Idaho, Utah St, and New Mexico St? Maybe Nevada and/or Hawaii?

Wichita St would probably be in the AAC or CUSA deoending on how their athletics went

Did not add schools that shut down between 1900 and 1930. They did not have enough history in college sports.

Northridge State - Big West
Cal.-Riverside - Big West

Loyola Marymount - West Coast
Loyola-Chicago - Pioneer League
Loyola-Maryland - Patriot League

UTA - Sun Belt
UTRGV - WAC
Vermont - America East (split from CAA)
Wichita State - MVFC
Milwaukee - Pioneer League
Xavier, Ohio - Big East (FCS conference)
California Baptist - Big Sky (football only)

For the "new" conferences:
America East - Albany, Maine, Monmouth (football only), New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Stony Brook, Vermont
Atlantic 10 - Dayton (upgrades from Pioneer League), George Washington, Rhode Island, Richmond, Saint Bonaventure, Saint Joseph's, Saint Louis
Big East - Butler (updgrades from Pioneer League), Creighton, DePaul, Marquette, Providence, Saint John's, Seton Hall, Villanova, Xavier
Big West - Cal Poly, Fullerton State, Long Beach State, Northridge State, UC-Riverside, UC-Santa Barbara, UC Davis
MAAC (non-scholarship) - Canisius, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Niagara, Rider, Siena
West Coast (non-scholarship) - Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Pacific, Pepperdine, Portland, Saint Mary's, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Clara

Great stab at what would have been an impossible task. Aligning schools along with the rest of their other sports works for pretty much everyone until you get to a couple of outliers -- the Big East, the CAA, a football-only Yankee Conference.

So much has happened over the last 50 years that it would be nearly impossible to tell, and a lot of recent history could have been changed if more schools had football. Take the northeast as an example: would the Eastern 8 and Big East had formed differently if football had been considered? How would the Big East have worked football in and where would Syracuse, Pitt and Boston College have landed? Would the Big East be a top flight FCS scholarship playing conference with Georgetown, St. John's, Marquette and Villanova, who all have different aspirations for football? Would the Big West have just downgraded to FCS instead of dropping football?

Although the OP just did a Wikipedia dump into a thread, there are a lot of considerations here. It would make a better essay (or Sports Management thesis) than message board pondering.

These were all used to be D1 or considered major programs at one time. Were would they be now today?

Where's Carlisle? Jim Thorpe played there!

Did not add schools that shut down between 1900 and 1930. They did not have enough history in college sports.

David, even military camps fielded teams that played at what we would call the D1 level today. Carlisle was an institution for Native Americans. One that for which Jim Thorpe played. I made the illustration to show just how incomplete these lists are, but also to show that in the 30's and 40's there was no snobbery per se regarding college football associations, in fact due to the Army camps scheduling college teams, they didn't even have to be teams that were associated with colleges and universities. If you could field a team of young men roughly the same age and play a full schedule of games (about 6 or 7 in those days) you could play anyone, just like Carlisle, and more important to your query you didn't have to be in a conference at all.

RE: Which Conference These Schools Be In Today If They Did Not Dropped Football?
The biggest losers for not having football are....

Long Beach State
Cal State Fullerton
Pacific
UTA
Wichita State

Pacific, LBSU and CSUF are stuck in obscurity and will continue to be moving forward. UTA got a lifeline with the Sun Belt and have drastically changed their profile. Now that they have climbed out of lost and found, they will add Football before going back. Wichita State was fortunate enough to hire Mark Turgeon and then Marshall, bringing basketball back to national prominence. Without that stroke of luck/genius and the citizens of Wichita backing the Shox with $, we would still be an also ran in the Valley and very similar to the Cali schools. Oddly enough, we were still able to land in the conference we belong in, one with many former peer schools and rivals. Much like UTA, we will bring back football if it is required to stay with this group. We are not going back....

RE: Which Conference These Schools Be In Today If They Did Not Dropped Football?
Had Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, UC Santa Barbara (FCS/1-AA level), and Pacific not dropped football, then the Big West would look very different today. There is a good chance San Jose State, Utah State, Fresno State, and New Mexico State would not have left, and Hawaii would also be in that conference. UNLV for sure would have moved on regardless. Boise State would have passed through I suspect, and Nevada would have come in at some point and stuck as the 10th FB school. UC Irvine was a Basketball school even back then. Somebody would have been the 12th Basketball only school. UOP probably would have dropped football anyway, it proved impossible for small private schools to play by the 1990s.

The dropping of Football by UOP, LBS and CSF pretty much forced UNLV, Fresno State, then SJSU and Hawaii out of the Big West and into the WAC by 1996. That might not have happened. Long Beach dropping was the most disappointing at the time, they had more resources and should have been secure. They would be a monster today given their LA location.

Agreed about LBSU, a "Boise" type team there would be insane.

In the exact opposite of this thread, one of if not the biggest loser for having a football program that is historically awful is New Mexico. If they had an ECU/BYU type program they would be a slam dunk for either the PAC or Big XII.
