RE: Which Conference These Schools Be In Today If They Did Not Dropped Football?
Boston would get to the Patriot much sooner with football.

It's hard to imagine a future for Pacific (they really wanted back in with the WCC and weren't going to let football fraction those chances), since it seems they really cut down their spending out there, but the Cal State's...that tosses a possibility Big West could have survived as a FBS football conference.

Long Beach
Fullerton
NMSU
Idaho
North Texas
Arkansas State
Boise
Utah State

Even with the cutting between MWC, WAC, and Sun Belt, the top five stay put and probably keep one of the others around to stay at the minimum level. Maybe Hawaii comes over? They stay alive a bit longer. Maybe you get an entry point for the other FCS schools to field FBS football on the cheap this way...the Montana's, NDSU, Cal Poly, some of the other Big Sky football schools...now you have more FBS teams in the west.

The WAC couldn't kill that. Still too many Cal State teams getting the benefit of Big West affiliation that wouldn't get attention to a WAC with Fresno and San Jose probably stuffing the others?

One thing that is certain is that whichever conference they ended up in, if they had not dropped football, DavidSt would have a thread about them moving to a different one.

RE: Which Conference These Schools Be In Today If They Did Not Dropped Football?
David the RMAC was never considered a D1 conference. The conference levels didn't exist. It stopped being a major conference in 1937 when CU,CSU, Denver, UW, UU, BYU and USU left. And for 1938 the only members were what is now Northern Colorado, Colorado College, School of Mines, Western State, and Montana State. You can't seriously think that Colorado College could sustain a D1 athletic department. They can barely compete at the D3 level. Actually, CC was left out when the RMAC reorganized and expanded in 1967

I'm going to take a wild stab at this one and guess if Buffalo State, Cortland State, Hartwick College, Ithaca College and Utica College had football, they'd be in the Empire 8 Conference and if Hobart and RPI had football, they'd be in the Liberty League.

I mean, probably still the MAAC. It was a non-scholarship league in football. All the MAAC schools dropped their football programs except for Marist, which moved to the Pioneer. Monmouth joined later and found another home for their scholarship football team. Siena would've also needed a new stadium, they played in Heritage Park, a minor-league baseball stadium that was mothballed around that same time. The area's new minor-league baseball stadium is on the Hudson Valley Community College campus and I'm not sure how adaptable it even is for football. Other than UAlbany's football stadium, there really aren't any other adequate facilities. The City of Albany's Bleecker Stadium is underwhelming enough that even Albany High School is currently in the process of building their own field. The Siena campus is pretty much locked into its current size and the high-income neighbors don't want bright lights. Siena is much better off focusing on basketball. Lacrosse has growth potential.

It has already been mentioned but West Texas A&M would likely be in a completely different conference and situation had they stayed DI. They might have landed anywhere from the WAC, Sun Belt, CUSA, or even the MWC had things gone well. They are a football school to the max and have their market pretty well cornered with a solid fan base being the only large school in the area. They would have had their fair share of UT/Tech/A&M fans but imagine them "gaining steam" instead of Texas State and UTSA coming on board with DI football.

I get the impression playing in other schools' facilities goes over like a fart in church.

In Philly, you have to wonder what kind of face UPenn makes when it offers Franklin Field's services. A capable, seasoned venue, it gets no play from Temple of Villanova. No reason it shouldn't, other than it just not looking good from image/PR. As if image has to drive everything?

In basketball, it was the two bigs (Villanova and Temple) who took Big 5 games out of the Palestra and back onto their home courts, if the Palestra is the smaller venue. It's still good enough for St. Joe's and LaSalle, though. It was fine enough for a time...not anymore. Shame that it had to change...and still no good reason to, other than greed and image. Tradition meant nothing.

West Texas A&M is not that big of a school. Having only 9900 students they are smaller than A&M-Commerce, A&M-Corpus Christi, and Tarleton State just among the other A&M system schools. The Amarillo metropolitan area is only around 250k people as well.

If they had FBS football they might be able to pull some support away from Texas Tech, but they'd still be behind UTSA and Texas State. There's just not many people in that area. They could be a solid FCS program, but I don't see them growing much more than that any time soon.

I mean, no one can sort through all that. I'm not sure if the expectation is to come up with a conference for each one of those 100 or so schools from DI-NAIA...

Anyways, it's interesting enough of a question, so how about if I do some weed-whacking and propose a more manageable and relevant list:

What conferences do you think these football programs would be in today if they were still around and what would those conferences look like?

Boston U
Pacific
Cal State Fullerton
Long Beach State
Wichita State

I fail to see how different this is than any of the rest of his posts

Had they stayed D-I, they'd have been in the WAC, then probably independent, though perhaps in C-USA today. They'd be struggling to find an identity like NMSU is currently.

Not sure. They have been pretty good at winning conference championships in football. Their real rivals in all sports are at the D1 level. They would have been better than New Mexico State in the SBC lately.

The scope of this thread is entirely to broad. Can we limit the conversation to just schools that are still in D1 but no longer sponsor football? That's a bit more manageable.

Looking at just the programs out West I'd say if Cal St Fullerton, Long Beach St, Cal St Northridge, and Pacific still had teams their would still be either a WAC or Big West football conference at the FBS level featuring those schools along with UC Davis, Cal Poly, Sacramento St, Idaho, and NMSU.

Programs like UT-A and UALR are probably exactly where they are now. Wichita St would have been passed around a few leagues since 1985 but would still probably land in the same spot they are now.

Had Washington & Lee not deemphasized athletics shortly before the SoCon broke up, they might well have been in the ACC with Virginia and peers like Wake Forest.

A lot of speculation, a lot that could probably be made into an interesting blog entry or essay or thesis/reflection. And a lot that didn't happen for various reasons.

You can't really tell what may or may not have happened beyond the past five years or so. Chief example: what if Miami dropped out of FBS as they considered around 1980? That's quite a bit of history changed, both on and off the field. Maybe the original Big East doesn't get formed and maybe Florida State becomes the biggest power over the years because they no longer have to lose multiple games on a last second field goal to a team that took full advantage. Then maybe they go on to be in the SEC or B1G. Recruiting strategies wouldn't be what they are thanks to Howard Schnellenberger's tactics and, again with Florida State, maybe they get that many more players that otherwise would have gone to the U.
