It would be awesome. Any chance it could work?

UTEP
UTSA
SMU
Texas St.
Rice
Houston
North Texas

Major downgrade for Houston and SMU. I see no reason they'd be interested.

You are correct. SMU and Houston wouldn't go for it unless they were given a real sweet deal.

What would they have to get to consider it?

Major downgrade for Houston and SMU. I see no reason they'd be interested.

Not to mention they'd be greatly reducing their recruiting exposure.

Houston playing Tulane in New Orleans does far more for them than playing UTEP. And if they want exposure in Dallas, they've already got SMU.

Not sure how many players Houston has from Louisiana but Texas has plenty of talent to go around.

I seem to recall a few years back when it was announced that 20 of the top 25 teams had starting QBs from Texas.

16 is fine for the ones who have plenty of food on the table. At 16 we have too many mouths to feed.

I think a better business model for the rest of us is a smaller group put together by common interest levels.

the money that we are splitting is so small that it doesn't matter. You will save money on the travel for all your sports. 1/16th of nothing is nothing.

Devil's advocate: because the money is so small, it makes it that more vital not to split it too many ways.

RE: Surviving in a G5 World
Example you might lose 50,000K by splitting it two more ways and save $200,000Kon travel resulting in a net savings. Just spit balling numbers but that's my point. You will also collect the entrance fees to offset an initial hit for a few years.

It makes much more sense to have UTEP playing most of its games west of the Mississippi and the FUs East of it. FIU should only have to travel to UTEP once every 8 years at the most.

Shipping everyone of you programs from the east to the west costs a lot of money.

That said it will all sort itself out as all the leagues will end up with 16 teams any way regardless of what the public wants. That is where its all headed. You will start seeing that shift in the next two or three rounds of realignment. I know what I said is not popular but trust me. Every league will have a minimum of 16 teams not far down the road. Some of the G5 leagues may be up to 24.

In Virginia, our politicians came up with legislation to limit the usage of student fees and I'm sure the limits will only grow in the future. What happens to FIU if the Florida state legislature does the same to them?

If the Florida state legislature says $0 to athletics tomorrow
FIU has to replace $23M
FAU has to replace $19M
UCF has to replace @25M
USF has to replace $21M

So in your scenario, everyone gets f'd, not just FIU.

I am still perplexed at the raging hardon y'all have for FIU & FAU. 01-wingedeagle

What if they do it like VA & GA did and limit it based on percentage of budget? UCF & USF would be a lot better off.

I think the FAU and the state government have a pretty strong relationship. I doubt they're are going to "UAB" us. The state government wants to see growth in public universities in the south, outside of the wasteland that is Miami of course. I would even say we are in a better position than USF, when it comes to state investment. They see our potential and they love that we are not surrounded by high crime neighborhoods, *cough* FIU.

Why would UH downgrade to that? Travel expenses would have to get outrageous for that. Besides, we've already experienced a conference like that, it was called the Southwest Conference, it broke up because there was no TV money and as a result UH ended up on the outside looking in.
