What does that even mean? I actually like AK.

Again, not pointing anyone out. Just making a statement...

We have a few posters here who pimp Forbes but scoff at the idea of AK. And it makes no sense.

Aoparently whoever makes the decisions at the UofM doesn't like either.

One coach removed from NCAA probation, and with Forbes just having a little low level experience under his belt, just didn't see any way we could pursue him last time around. Maybe next time.

Intentional wrongness, or you just don't know any better? Tubby had taken Tulsa to the S16 - twice - and won a NC by the time he was AK's age. No comparison.

I'll take the coach who has proven he can put together a competitive team in creative ways (JUCO, transfers, overlooked Memphis kids, etc.)
I'll take the coach who has been to the NCAA tournament more; and upset a higher seed.
I'll take the coach who won the SEC.

Again... I get why people wouldn't want AK. I really do. Because while all those things sound good, I realize there are plenty of counterpoints that can be made. I'm not saying he'd be my choice...

But to so strongly believe in Forbes while dismissing Kennedy defies logic. If it's b/c AK is at Ole Miss...fine, just admit that (as you pimp the guy who was Pearl's right hand at UT when UT was our biggest rival).

AK and Ole Miss have been irrelevant since he arrived there. Relevance in college bball, in my opinion, means having a team that is ranked throughout most of a season and/or makes a S16 run. You could also add earning respect from a national audience as a tough team that knows how to play (e.g. Butler, Wichita St. Gonzaga, Villanova, etc.) Ole Miss does not fall into this category.

Yeah and ETSU is nationally relevant?

AK is at friggin Ole Miss! That program is a bottom-5 major conference program in all of CBB. And he's consistently competed in the SEC. He's won the league. He's made NCAAs. He's upset higher seeds. He's attracted transfers and international players. He's had All-SEC players consistently.

He's done a lot at an absolute crap program - all things considered. No history. No fan support. No booster support. Beyond terrible facilities. No local recruits. Etc...

I think that would translate to more success at a program that gave him some stuff to work with.

Greg Marshall calling on line 2. He said it is possible to be relevant at a "crap program".

Would you rather hire Greg Marshall or Andy Kennedy? I think we both know the answer to that.

Again, we don't know Forbes' ceiling yet. He could be a Greg Marshall type. We know AK isn't.

WSU plays 1-AA football. It's all they have.

OM puts so much emphasis on football that they are under NCAA investigation. That is their cash cow.

I still think Marshall is superb, and all things considered, would take him over AK. That being said, Memphis has had two opportunities to get AK and have whiffed.

Not whiffed. Passed. I thought they would make a run at him when Cal left. I wasn't excited about him when Pastner left.

Not anti-Forbes, but I think some feel he is younger that he is, since he just got a D1 job 2 years ago. He'll be 52 in a couple of weeks.

Tubby ain't leaving, but I hope we go young with our next hire in a few years.

The age doesn't bother me. 52 isn't that old.

What I like about Forbes is the hope of what he could be when given the keys to a program like Memphis. He's an unknown, but there is a lot of optimism around him.

AK may be younger in age, but he's had his chance to prove what he can do. And he's proven to be very mediocre. No one is knocking down his door to hire him away.

If unproven is what excites you, go for Penny. Heck, give the keys to Keelon.

RE: Steve Forbes
If you're hiring at Memphis or Missouri or LSU or similar then you make a phone call to Gregg Marshall and Archie Miller.

Then you move down the list of mid-majors that will likely move:

Steve Forbes
Will Wade
Kevin Keatts
Matt McCall
Dan Hurley
Leon Rice

Etc.

With suggestions on assistant hires at Memphis:

Ryan Miller
Tony Madlock
Jordan Mincy
Preston Laird

Leaving Missouri and lsu out, any list that doesn't include Penny Hardaway is a massively flawed list.

If I was an AD interviewing Penny, then I'd need to hear a compehensive plan - assistants, philosophy, etc.

But then you run into the JT3 issue that he is unfireable without severe damage to both the program and relationship.

This would never be a thought for me. I'm not going to say hey I can't hire Penny because he MIGHT end up becoming JT3. The reason I'd hire Penny is because he's bringing in ballers.

Penny would be great as long as he's got an experienced coach sitting next to him.

We've got a guy on this board who knows more about hoops than 99% of people. Maybe he could be Penny's assistant, since he's so gifted? What say you?

I've got one person on ignore. I've never done that in my 12 years here. That means I don't care.
If Penny is ever named our coach, I'd fully expect Tony Madlock to be here and that would be good. I'd also expect Penny to hire an older, experienced mid-level type former head coach to assist.

That's what we said about Pastner.

That's actually funny to compare those two individuals. I don't ever recall anyone saying that pastner would be great, under any circumstances. Even if God himself was sitting next to him on the bench.
Hardaway brings a bunch of positives and a bunch of intangibles that no one else has. Pure coaching ability may not be one of those tangibles, however. But he knows that and he's extremely smart, knowing he's got to get and x and o guy that can help him. He's said it himself.

I was kidding about Mr. 99.

As for Tony M., and an experienced x and o coach...I like this. I like your thinking.
