I think (and hope) that Mik Aoki is looking for work next week.

Wanted: A decent coach to lead a baseball team in a cold, gray, perpetually overcast environment......but on a positive note the field truf is always green.

It will certainly be intriguing to see where they end up looking.

I've heard whispers that they may try and woo Gary Gilmore away from Coastal Carolina. I'm not sure it will be easy to pry him away from his alma mater after being head coach there for over 20 years and winning a national title, but money may talk. Gilmore is also originally from Franklin County, which is located in southwest Virginia practically next door to Blacksburg. Who knows if "coming home" means anything, but it's an interesting nugget at least.

Gilmore would be a phenomenal hire as well.

Pat Murphy--(1988-94)---318-116-1 (.732). NCAA Regional finals appearances in 1992, 1993 and 1994. (old format).

Paul Mainieri--(1994-06)--533-213-3 (.714), a large number of 40 win seasons, conference championships, regional bids and a 2002 College World Series appearance.

Mik Aoki--(2011-Present)--174-161-1. One regional appearance (2015).

I think that ND can attract a much better candidate. He has had seven years and has done a fairly bad job.

Nobody is allowed to think about changing baseball coaches.

Didn't you get the XLance memo? :)

Miami beats Georgia Tech in 13 innings. Both teams have one more game but that eliminates the Jackets from advancing from their pod as only the top seed can advance in the case of a three-way tie at 1-1.

Miami moves closer to continuing their NCAA streak by winning their 5th straight game.

9 seed Duke upset 5 seed Clemson, eliminating the Tigers. Duke will play UVA to advance from that pod, making the bolded game above meaningless in this tournament. Both teams will likely still battle to help their NCAA positioning however.

I'm not a fan of this format. If you are not the top seed in your pool and you lose the first game, you are eliminated but still have to play another game. If everybody in the a pool finishes 1-1, the higher seed advances. What is the point of Clemson playing another game if they can't make it out of the pod?

The combination of format and game scheduling order (highest seed does not play in opening game for each pod) does create an undesirable situation. As you mentioned, the first game of each pod is an elimination game, but the losing team still has to play a 2nd game.

Clemson for example was eliminated on Tuesday, but must stick around three days to play UVA on Friday in a game that means nothing to either team ACC tournament wise. It could help or hinder each team with NCAA placement.

As expected, rain all day in Louisville is impacting the tournament. Game 1 was moved from an 11am start to 1pm, and is now in an indefinite delay. At best we may get one game in today.

RE: Open Thread - 2017 Baseball Season
Since only one game was played yesterday (FSU beat Notre Dame 5-3 in 13 innings, eliminating the Irish), we will play 4 game today and 4 games tomorrow.

Thursday
North Carolina vs. Boston College, 11 a.m. at Slugger
Georgia Tech vs. Wake Forest, Noon at Jim Patterson
Duke vs. Virginia, 3 p.m., at Slugger
Louisville vs. Notre Dame, 7p.m., at Slugger

Friday
Miami vs. Wake Forest, 11 a.m. at Slugger
Clemson vs. Virginia, Noon at Jim Patterson
Florida State vs. Louisville, 3 p.m. at Slugger
NC State vs. North Carolina, 7 p.m. at Slugger

Each day one game will be played five miles away at Louisville's normal home ballpark. Both games chosen to be moved will have no impact on who advances from those pods. If they get these game in, pod play will end on time tomorrow evening
