RE: Speculating on Lester's staff
We paid 1.25 to assistants last year. Lester actually has less to pay assistants than PJ did last year.

Receivers coach will be Ashton Aikens.

Western Michigan: Source tells FootballScoop Tim Lester is expected to hire Southern Illinois receivers coach Ashton Aikens. Aikens, who has coached receivers the past three seasons at SIU, previously coached at Northwestern (special teams QC) where he also played receiver.

Their five year deal signed in 2012 was for an assistant coach salary pool of $825,000. Unless they renegotiated that salary, it was still that amount this year. The proposed contract amount for 2017 was speculated to boost the assistant salaries but since that was never signed by Fleck...

Look up each coach in the USA Today database. Then use addition.

How about you use real numbers and try the same addition.

RE: Speculating on Lester's staff
So What we think we have so far:

Head Coach: Tim Lester

Defensive Coordinator: Big Lou/Tim Daust
D-Line Big Lou
Linebackers- David Duggan
Defensive backs- Cory Sanders/ Tim Daust?

Offensive Coordinator- Kevin Johns
QB coach Johns?
O-Line- ?
Tight Ends/Tackles Bill Kenney?
Running Backs-?
Wide Recievers- Ashton Aikens

Strength and conditioning: Purdue Assistant

That about right? Did i miss anybody? Thinking Kenney and Duggan are sticking around. Kenney could go to O-line if he is staying. I think a few of the Linebacker commits commented they were staying because Duggan was staying.

Middle Tennessee State: Former Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer has been named defensive coordinator at MTSU. Shafer worked at from 2009-15, including the final three years as head coach. He’s also been the defensive coordinator at Michigan, Stanford and Western Michigan. Shafer briefly joined Maryland as defensive coordinator last year, but stepped down in April due to personal reasons.

Does anyone know if Shafer was asked to be DC at Western? Seems hard to believe he would turn down the Broncos to go to MTSU for the same position.

My apologies. I had read the $800k number and thought that source was reliable. I then compounded my error with not taking the time to delve into the budget numbers. It's been a long stretch of enjoying Kalamazoo Beer Week so I'll blame that. :)

One critical piece of the coaching puzzle is not listed above.
Who is the new Running Back coach going to be?

Just start filing through all the St Josephs or Elmhurst coaches of the past three years or so. You'll find him.

Wait -- what? No, honestly. Really? I'm not saying he's bad but... this better be a "Shocker" like PJ coming in. It can, but the thing is that it Must.... and I need to tell myself this...

Please Lester -- bring the end of the 90s back!!!!!! Let's do this!

RE: Speculating on Lester's staff
Tim seems pretty bright and I remember his news conference comments about assistant coach talent, saying that he knew some Div. 2 or Div. 3 coaches that were more impressive than Div. 1 assistant coaches. If he were coming here with no stops at Div. 1 schools, that would be concerning, but he may be on to something here having spent time time at Purdue and Syracuse.
