Not sure why RIP didn't work out here. Always liked him and thought he was a good coach.

1- He played a much tougher schedule than Today
2- he was a head coach who valued conservative play more than winning
3-his asst coaches did not like him because he micromanaged and would change gameplans after the asst coaches worked for a long time ........to be more conservative
4- He also had less admin support than today

Rip was a "keep it close and hope" kind of coach. He did play a much tougher schedule and he did recruit some pretty darn good players to the U of M.

It was all worth November 9, 1996. One of my best days ever. Then went to Tunica and watched Holyfiled beat Tyson. There was something in the air that night.

He walked around writing in a Franklin planner all the time.
I found that a little strange.

RE: Rip homecoming this season
He had NFL talent on defense, but really never had a lot of talent at the skill positions on offense. We were regularly playing outstanding defense against very good Southern Miss teams, and still losing 20-5 and 24-3.
I guess that last season when he was down to his son as the QB sealed it.
Never had a winning season.

Put the talent on defense, manage the game and the clock, and hope for a big play/miracle late.
Most fans were begging him to open up the offense west coast style (the trendy term back then). He felt the other way was our best chance to win. May have been right - by the book. But didn't make it much fun - and didn't work out so well.

Tim Walton and Randy Fichtner. When we were known as 'DBU' or 'defensive back university' with Michael Stone, Reggie Howard, Idrees Bashir were great players. Mike McKenzie was an absolute stud as well. How much of that was Rip, and how much was otherwise, I don't know.
I will say this about Rip. He was INSANELY conservative. The guy simply believed that the play-action fake represented unconservative play-calling. I can remember wringing my hands when Rip simply would NOT throw a sideline fade pattern (in which 99% of D-1 cornerbacks NEVER intercept).
The ultimate Rip: when Scott Scherer started against East Carolina and we won, ECU scored and Rip instructed Ryan Johnson to take a knee before contact on the ensuing kickoff. Unbelievable.

the worst decision was taking Neil Suber out of the game after he drove us inside the 10 yard line at UT and put in a freshman QB who threw an interception on the very next play. I still get pissed to this day about that decision.

RE: Rip homecoming this season
Rip was always a play away from winning some close games. And I remember we could never catch a break, especially against SEC teams. The one that sill pisses me off to this day was against Miss St. when Kamal Shakir stuck their QB, Wayne Madkin I think, and caused a fumble. We returned it for a TD that would've tied the game. It was called back. The referee said the forward progress had been stopped. One of the most bogus calls I've ever seen.

Yes he did. In that game we shouldn't have won. The next game we played them in Knoxville we should have won. I remember after that game we went to dinner in Knoxville and while we were waiting, several Vol fans congratulated us and said we should have won and they were lucky that day. Then they started arguing about Fulmer and Majors and they almost got into a fist fight. Best dinner ever in Knoxville.

He had some other big wins for us. The 87 game with Alabama for instance.

Rip homecoming this season
IMHO, Rip Scherer was the worst football coach the Tigers have ever had. I called Wolo's radio show during Rip's last year and asked who the worst coach had been to that point. Wolo named Rey Dempsey, but I read him their overall records and told him that Rip had a worse winning percentage than Dempsey, which the records did show.
I told him that additionally, the University had had to endure 6 years of Scherer, while Dempsey was let go after 2 years. And, Scherer led the nation in crying after games. I have never seen a head coach openly weep after losses like Rip did. There ain't supposed to be any crying in football.
I quit going to Highland Hundred meetings after several years of Rip, because the tradition was to give the head coach a standing "O" when he was introduced. Since I could not do that in good conscience, I just stayed away until he left.
