It was called back. The referee said the forward progress had been stopped. One of the most bogus calls I've ever seen.

First game I attended as a member of the band was the Ole Miss game in 1999. Lost 0-3. Talking about the one play away syndrome, Ken Coutain dropped a wide open pass where he could have waltzed into the endzone (seriously no one was around him for about 20 yards). He catches that we win 7-3.

That game was brutal.

I was just in sixth grade but I remember being old enough to know that both teams were pissing me off.

And I remember the call in show 'Ken Coutain couldn't catch a cold!'.

Oh, Forrest Goodman, what a good professional he was that night!

Rip literally ripped my heart out several times because he ALWAYS played it close to the vest and 'let the defense win it'. So many times where just a SLIGHTLY less conservative play calling and we would have won.

Finally, let us not forget: FASTSNAPPER!!!!

Bring back fastsnapper!

It was a major accomplishment for the offense to get a first down much less a touchdown. My wife sat in the stands with me and would call where and what the next play would be and she doesn't know squat about football.

I remember this game too. I remember an Ole Miss friend of mine sticking his chest out after the game all proud of himself. I pointed out that the Tigers win if Coutain catches that ball. I don't know about 20 yards, but, your right, he was wide open and woulda waltzed in the end zone because he was so fast, plus it was a prefect pass. But anyway, after I pointed that out to my Rebel friend he just looked at me, shrugged is shoulders, and said "but he didn't catch it" in a pompous kind of way. A few years later when we beat Eli and the Rebels at the Liberty Bowl that same Rebel friend said if so and so would have caught that ball, we should've won that game (they dropped a ball in the end zone that game). I looked at him, shrugged my shoulders, and said "but he didn't catch it".

I told him that additionally, the University had had to endure 6 years of Scherer, while Dempsey was let go after 2 years. And, Scherer led the nation in crying after games. I have never seen a head coach openly weep after losses like Rip did. There ain't supposed to be any crying in football.

I quit going to Highland Hundred meetings after several years of Rip, because the tradition was to give the head coach a standing "O" when he was introduced. Since I could not do that in good conscience, I just stayed away until he left.

Larry Porter would like to disagree.

Dick Vermiel comes to mind, but he won the Super Bowl.

The 1999 loss at Tennessee was particularly painful. We outplayed them.
We were up 13-10 late in the 4th and had a 4th and inches deep in UT territory. Rip opted for the FG to go up 16-10. We lost 17-16 on a TD pass with less than 1 minute to play. That game perfectly exemplified Rip's painful tenure at Memphis. He was not incompetent, like Porter, but he was a wuss on the sidelines at winning time.

This Dude had a game plan, play the toughest ooc schedule possible and he did. Recruit the schedule, he brought in some good players, remember Whimpine was his recruit and DeAngelo in the pipeline. Then tommy west takes Rips job, bums down the schedule, wins with Rips players, goes to lousy bowls and quits recruiting . Plus west refused to play DeAngelo at utk his senior yr.

I swear that Rip had a plan to address the media for EVERY close loss:

'I believe our defense could step up and stop them'.

HE NEVER took a gamble. Ever. When you are on the road, go for the win, don't play not to lose. He never learned that.

So many heartbreaking losses and so FEW heart-stopping wins. To me, that's the indicator that Rip just didn't have the cajones to make the right play call.

Ha, probably true. Less than 150 yards passing in that game - combined total for both teams.
