RE: CUSA Basketball -- Conference Play Week Two
when you run your mouth like that expect some repercussions. Hey look I want them to be good. We need the whole top half to be good but don't run your mouth then come back and say you didn't when you catch flack. Our next two are at FAU and FIU and we could easily lose them both. Conference games are tough especially on the road. There are no gimmies.

While USM has not had a great history in men's basketball they have been far more successful in women's. We need the men to be strong and a regular in post season. I always feared James greens teams the most.

At the MT vs WKU ladies game which isn't going well... WKU playing great defense and the Raiders just turning it over all day. May have more turnovers than points now. Ouch!

Ignorance is bliss. I've lost count of how many times UAB has won a conference game on the road and watched our RPI drop.

That doesn't even make any sense. Before the UNT game, Middle Tennessee's RPI was .640 (with a ranking of 16). Today our RPI is .622 (with a ranking of 24).

Both the RPI as a percentage value and the ranking are in constant fluctuation based on the outcome of your game, the outcome of your opponents games and the outcome of their opponents. Before Saturday's games MT was at .626.

Unfortunately, when you are in a league that has a sub .500 record we get a major ding in our SOS every time we play a conference game because 75% of the RPI rating comes from opponents record (50%) and opponents-opponents record (25%) and people forget to apply opponents/opponents records - a majority of which (about 60%) come from your own conference mates. As we discuss every year this is why teams in conferences with winning percentages better than .500 continue to see their RPI rise all throughout the conference schedule because a majority of the RPI is derived from conference play (based on how well your conference mates did out of conference).

No, the RPI definitely drops. As many MT fans will tell you (and have told you) it happens frequently... :/

Wasn't it three or maybe four years ago that they ended the season with like a 36 RPI or something and didn't get an at-large? That's off of memory but they've had recent success as well as traditionally decent. Yes they (as well as us) need to return to form sooner rather than later.

He's right, LOL Even in winning we lose. Hopefully UTSA turns the corner in the near future and gets a new facility.

We've taken the most important step, and hired a high-quality coach. But I agree on the facility, as all UTSA faithful have been hoping for a new basketball arena for a while now. We've already tried a couple options, but couldn't find the funding fast enough to make the deals work. We're already pouring money into our academics as we push to try and attain Tier One status, poured a lot into football for our new staff there, and we increased our pay for men's basketball to hire our new staff there. We're also looking at improving our baseball stadium and building a new training/weight facility for our student athletes.

So there's a lot we have in the works at the moment, meaning there's no telling what sort of timeline there is for a new basketball arena. But having a quality coach is definitely more important for us in the short term to get our program back on track, as from what I know about recruits, guys are more inclined to pick a program based on the coach they'll play for rather than the court they'll play on. We're doing what we can though.

RE: CUSA Basketball -- Conference Play Week Two
Here's how the conference looks after watching a couple weeks of basketball:

Team to Beat:
1. MTSU- watched the WKU game, Williams is the newcomer of the year in the conference and brings MTSU team to different level. Combined that with Upshaw and Potts, and MTSU is more than likely going to win the CUSA Reg Season

Teams that could get the first round byes in the Conference tourney
UAB
Marshall
Tech
Rice (possibly already played the two best teams in CUSA)

Teams that will end up with winning conference records
ODU (If Stith comes back soon)
UTSA
WKU

Losing Records:
USM
UTEP
FAU
Charlotte

No Hope:
UNT
FIU

The team is really bad when it is in a category below "losing record".

What usuallyhappens is there are three teams that deserve a first round bye. and there are three teams that really suck. Then there are 8 teams that are anywhere between 9-7 and 7-9. These teams are pretty much interchangeable and have won as many games as they have because they played bad conference teams. Through some complicated tiebreaker system, one of those teams will get a first round bye, despite barely winning more games in conference than they lost.

I'd argue the past few years CUSA has been very competitive at the top. In fact the last three the number 5 spot had won at least 12 conference games. It kind of makes the number 2 or 3 spot a little more attractive than the #1 seed.

I'm laughing at both.
And it wasn't so very long ago we were right there, so keep hope.

As for Rice, the rankings say that we haven't played the top two teams yet. But we will have after tonight. LATech really is making a case for solidifying the #2 spot and tonight's game should give us another piece to the puzzle that is the 2017 season. Tech is understandably favored at home. If we keep it close (but lose) then, sure we still belong in the conversation, but at some point we're going to have to start winning some games. If we can steal one tonight then we would be set up for a solid run at 3-3. If not, then it would be uphill battle from 2-4 for what is admittedly a solid Rice team. Rice is #3 in the conference in KenPom right now but still projected to finish T-5 in the final standings because of our 1-3 start.
