Gary is floating at about that level, but his own running mate has come out for Hillary in recent days to stop Trump. Are they going to reverse course and make the practical argument that, for once, a vote for the LP isn't a throwaway?

Actually, as long as the expectation was that he would hurt Trump, the MSM tended to fawn over him. Then a few polls started showing him hurting Hillary more than Trump, and the gotcha questions started coming out. And he was unprepared for that.

If he had been prepared, he would be merely the marginalized yet reasonable candidate. His mistakes have cost him in the perception game, and I figure he's now considered the dopey pothead who belongs on the sidelines anyway

This requires the public to be well informed and capable of tactical voting, particularly if they don't live in a swing state.

I think Johnson might've floated at/above 5% despite his September of gaffes and the MSM drawing out their knives when they learned he was pulling a significant number of (liberal leaning) millennials.

But what might be the final blow is the tightening of the race these past couple weeks.

It's easier for folks to vote third party if they believe it's already a slam-dunk for a candidate.

As it's been mentioned ad nauseum, Johnson takes a lot of blame for this missed opportunity. As lights got brighter on him, it became apparent he had trouble hitting pitches in the big leagues. Even before "Aleppo", his dry, clumsy on-camera demeanor couldn't ignite passion.

Nate Silver was saying that GJ was going to see his percentage drop the closer we got to Election Day because 3rd party candidates always trend that way due to the race tightening
