Well they can't be D-II Indy either, did that poster mean Indy Indy? Like play whoever wherever?
Cheyney is leaving the NCAA at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. I guess their only option and best option is the USCAA otherwise they would have no athletic affiliation. Maybe that's what was meant; an unaffiliated program like UVA Lynchburg. It's too late for 2018-19 NAIA membership and they are on NCAA probation through August 2019. There are only 5 NAIA schools within 400 miles so travel costs would skyrocket in NAIA.
To answer your earlier question Fresno St. Alum:
Quote:why are they going to 13?
Claflin is non-football so there is no issue there; conference bylaws were changed to allow admittance to non-football schools. The CIAA can work around 13 in basketball but the big reasons are baseball and men's tennis. The CIAA dropped those sports for 2017-18 because there were not enough teams and Claflin has both sports. Claflin will be the 6th baseball and 5th men's tennis school allowing the conference to bring baseball back after just a 1 year hiatus. The CIAA will not be at 13 long, look for another non-football (with baseball and men's tennis) school to be announced sometime this year.
thanks, I don't follow as close as I used too. I got lazy and ask you guys.
D-I we have Cal Baptist, UCSD, UNA coming
D-II we have Frostburg St., UT-Tyler, Benedictine(IL) coming
D-III we have St.Thomas(TX) coming.
anything else?
D-II is UT-Tyler, Benedictine(IL), Savannah State. Frostburg St. is still a maybe future add.

PSU Schuylkill is applying to NAIA this year, did you count them? It may be that there are more PSUs to follow.
I do think the NAIA is in Cheyneys future if the survive. But probably not this year. And If, somehow, they are eligible now they might have applied iby the October deadline and just not announced it.
Wasn't aware of PSU Schuylkill; I need to look up who applied this year again. I counted Washington Adventist, Carlow, Point Park, Fisher, and St. Joseph (VT). Didn't include SUNY Delhi since they are reclassifying to NCAA D3.

Most likely due to frustration. Chowan has 6 teams as Conference Carolinas affiliates with another joining for 2018-19. The CIAA dropped sponsorship of 2 other sports Chowan has that are playing as independents now. That's 9 sports not participating in the primary conference and Chowan is down to 10 sports playing in the CIAA. Baseball returning is a step to keeping Chowan happy. Conference Carolinas sponsors all but 2 of Chowan's sports.

The Mountain East Conference will be losing a program and is interested in Frostburg to fill the empty position.

I though it had been mentioned and got curious to look it up. It was posted over a year ago in this thread; #67 and #71.

Johnson and Wales is joining the conference this year for their first year. Did they played all sports as an independent last year?

This year was their D3 exploratory year, with no change in status in the NAIA. Which means that for 2017-18 they are full NAIA members with a full NAIA schedule, but not affiliated with any conference. Just as they've been for years.
For 2018-19 they will no longer be NAIA.

The point is, we've known about it for more than a year. Refer to your own post #71.

RE: D-II/D-III/NAIA movement
Have added a timeline pinned thread for the schools joining new conferences, and where their sports go starting this year to next year. A lot of changes at all levels. Just waiting for acceptance for the schools applying this year for all levels.Second thread are latest info about schools for UT-tyler, the schools mentioned who applied for NAIA, Tarleton State, Frostberg State and others until they get invites or acceptance to a conference. We might used that thread for news of who got invited to update.

UMass Amherst just took over Mt Ida College. This will be the last season for their DIII sports teams, the school will close after this spring commencement. Will leave the ECFC with on 7 football teams.
All students and athletes will get automatically accepted to UMass Dartmouth. I assume some of the athletes will also look to transfer.

They've made comments like this before. They are now the only Jesuit school in the NAIA as far as I know, and may be feeling a little lonely. I know nothing about how Jesuit schools are financed, but I will assume they are self reliant. So I take this message as a plea for funds from supporters. At 2500 undergrads, a move to D2 would be doable but maybe not advisable. Google says their endowment is 245m, which is pretty healthy for a small private school.
Competitively they need work. As the article mentions, they are much healthier now than in the past. Their men's basketball team is actually winning some games. They'd need to significantly increase their athletic budget to keep from getting smoked in D2.
Geographically, there is a nice little collection of NAIA schools in New Orleans: Loyola, Xavier, Southern - NO, & Dillard. Others nearby are LSU Alexandria & Shreveport, and there's others in Mississippi and the Mobile area.

There are only 2 conferences that might take them at D2. Gulf south Conference or GAC. If GAC winds up getting Rogers State, Cameron, Central Oklahoma, UAFS and NE Oklahoma State, then no on them. GSC could get them, but as a pair and bring Louisiana College up from D3 at the same time.

D2 MEC Could Lose Shepherd and Virginia Wise
Shepherd is not the only school that looks like out the door. Virginia-Wise is also looking elsewhere as well. The reason for both schools are that they are outliers in the MEC, and moving to the other conferences would cut down travel costs.

Well if everyone is going to start darting the MEC then Urbana and Notre Dame ought to seek out their old friends in the G-MAC.
