This. If you sold the tickets, it counts.
Yes, but some schools give away tickets for free and then count them

Generally not. A booster, a sponsor or high roller usually buys those tickets & lets the school give then away. Very few outright giveaways.

If I had to guess ECU for the year will end up at a roughly 44-45k average.

Looks like UC is on pace to have decent attendance against Miami(OH) this weekend. My guess is we'll have around 38K (Miami won't bring many fans).

They could have hundreds there, despite the grueling 40 mile drive. I'm encouraged by the 36K at this point. I suspect we'll get awfully close to 40K, given the forecast and our penchant for good walk up sales.....

Bowling Green @ Memphis.
The university for whatever reason holds ticket sales close to its vest, so I have no idea what the turnout might be this Sat. 40,000 imho would be a good turnout.
I expect attendance to pick up when Houston, USF, Tulsa, and Temple come to town.

These numbers are skewed. Some teams only have had one or two home games. Some against big rivals early. I don't know that it really means much yet. Some schools lie.
Skewed? It shouldnt matter who you play. Outside of getting of all time historically top 10 to play in your house who bring 10-20k of their own fans, I fail to see your reasoning. Using UCF as an example......Maryland is no power, in fact, very few of their fans traveled. They are P5 in name only. I also might add that this average includes an FCS game. I could easily make an argument that it was skewed too low. Just because you don't like the numbers, doesn't mean they are skewed.
I see people saying this and it's silly. Sure it matters. And so does conference alignment.
Tell me Flordia would draw 90K for a home slate of Tulane, So. Miss, FIU, Georgia State, and Troy. And lets also say you are in a conference that has no NY6 bowl tie in for the winner and also in a conference where in most cases, your best year will get you a peach bowl bid and any hope of a play off is non existent because you aren't in a big boy conference.
It's one thing to be FLordia, playing in the SEC and have a few scrub home games to 'practice on' when your fans know Georgia, Bama, and etc. are coming in later, that your games are on CBS, and ESPN, and that you have as good a shot as anybody each year to make a playoff or at least win the SEC and get a major bowl.
Its another when you are in the G5, your home games are against teams you don't care about and you also know that you could win the conference and still not get a Sugar bowl/Fiesta bowl, etc. invite.
If Florida's home slate was what I listed every year and you were in a G5....you wouldn't need a stadium your size I can assure you of that. If you say otherwise you are either dimwitted or intellectually dishonest.
I can agree up to a point. Winning has everything to do with it, as well as fan base and hype. Those three things are important. Have all three and you are golden. Some teams will never have all three......ie NIU during their Orange Bowl run.
But my arguement was really in the context of the OP. Maryland is not a team that would skew any numbers.
Fair enough

Not necessarily. I know schools where the corporate community is pressured into to buying season tickets in large blocks and they have no intention of using them. They may give some to employees etc, but even the employees do not use them. Or some times a wealthy donor will purchase large blocks of tickets at a deep discount and may not be able to give all of them to people who want to go to the game.
Then some schools give tickets away at local grade and high school or to all of the hospitals or city employees and thus they are never used.

As an example, see Eastern Michigan's deal with Pepsi to buy enough $3 tickets every other year in order for them to meet the 15,000 average minimum:

or maybe some fall like weather. The bowl felt like a giant wok Saturday. no shade, no wind, just baking in the sun. Being a night game will help and hopefully we'll have 43-44,000 to bump our avgerage back up above 40,000.

True. It would be hard to sell 36k tickets for a 25k stadium.

Attendance averages this early are as silly as preasean polls. Byu has an average of 60000 and has played one home game.... wow really useful. Some have had 2 home games others have had 3. For years our first home game was ole miss and we would sell out 67000 plus.
That's all I meant. Sample size makes the average ridiculous.

Absolutely. Ticket revenue and contributions is the best indication of what the paying customer thinks the product is worth. I'm sure the start eyed kids are circling with different opinions, but it's hard to argue.

Probably close to 67K for the '96 Memphis vs UTK (Manning) game which Memphis won. Stadium has been downsized due to ADA requirements several years ago (62K+) & more recently the added chairback seats. Current capacity is just over 60K. The stadium itself is not the old, worn-out stadium many distractors attempt to claim. In appearance, it almost appears new. It still has arguably the best sight lines of any stadium in the country with more seats close to the field than most any other stadium of this size. Rest rooms are nice, concessions good & Tiger Lane is as good a tailgate environment as anywhere. What is lacking, is premium suite offerings & IMO a better OOC schedule to fill the seats. Memphis is capable of 50K+ avg attendance if we would upgrade the opponents to include regional schools like UK, AR, OM, UTK, Vandy, MO (scheduled) and have the occasional sectional game like UCLA (which is coming) next year. But most of these schools won't play us home & home. AR reneged on a contract (after we beat them 3 in a row), UTK still owes a game & so does Ole Miss (who has announced they will not renew).
