RE: Will McBride Dual QB commits to Memphis
Class 6A in Texas is the big...mega schools class. In other words, to play football for these schools...you have to be REALLY GOOD because you can be GOOD at a smaller school and at a 6A, you will be cut. On top of that, if your 6A teams had big time records in 2015...like 8-3 or 11-1...with junior QB's in charge...you have a really special QB leading that winning program. He has seen tough competition...from the biggest Texas high schools and come out on top. Well...we got TWO 6A winning Quarterbacks. Just sit back and think about that for a while. Recruiting success in Texas....the mother load state for top quarterbacks is now reality. Memphis to me...has always been an especially attractive place for high school players from Texas. I know...I have talked to several high schools stars from Texas who wanted to go to Memphis but the "Porter staff" was just too busy to talk to them.

He's very good, good arm, makes good decisions, moves in the pocket and runs for positive yardage when he needs to.
His receivers were very talented as well.

This is indeed great news for the program. It speaks volumes about Norvell's ability to recruit. With Texas being such a talent rich state it's a wonder that the of Universty of Texas can't put a decent QB on the field.

And it was not just Porter, but folks on this board (I did not actually hear it) claimed that Tommy West actually stated on his coach's "We don't recruit Texas." over the last few years. And that coincided with the noticeable drop in recruiting success. I think we had that set of three brothers from Texas (Hardin was the last name?) in the early 2000s but really did not have much at all beyond that.
I know you've been noting for years in your posts that we were leaving top talent without a fight regarding the state. And it was just silly during C-USA V2 as we had four Texas schools in the conference.

Don't ever remember hearing it and we did have players from Texas, but we also didn't have coaches with connections there. That is the biggest key in recruiting success.
But after 2007, West and staff didn't really recruit anywhere, let alone Texas.

That's like bypassing Alaska and gold mining in West Virginia.

Rivals has him at 6' and 195#
24/7 has him at 6'2 and 200#
At this growth rate he will be closer to 7'5 by next year.

RE: Will McBride Dual QB commits to Memphis
I had a kid from Martin High in Arlington, one of the best football schools in the state...very interested in Memphis. I never talked to him...my granddaughter was a cheerleader there and she mentioned it to me that he liked Memphis and was interested in talking to the coaches. He got some offers....New Mexico..North Texas...etc and ended up playing at North Texas. But, the real key here was...his brother....who was two years behind him. He just signed with Purdue. I think that family was a little bitter after they would not even get a call after sending a DVD to a coach involved in recruiting. Maybe the older brother was not the best player but...he was good enough for a phone call. The younger brother was the best of the two. But, maybe the coaches knew Porter was not longed for staying here and did not want to bother getting inroads into Arlington football (Coach Norvell and Daniel Monteil played high school ball in Arlington). Of course, it's water under the bridge now.

You misunderstood my post. Prior to 2007, we DID recruit Texas and we had Texas players. It wasn't until Coach West got sick of hearing the same things and getting NOTHING he was promised (along with the added impact of his heart issues) that he basically threw in the towel. I know of multiple players that were offered scholarships simply by word of mouth. No coach visited, recruited or even watched film on the player. The staff knew their time was limited.
BUT, with that said... Texas is NOT the end all of talent in football. If you look at the ESPN top 300, the overwhelming majority is the South East region and California. Texas has fallen over the years.
I would love to see us have a footprint in Texas, but I wouldn't trade it for FL, GA or LA.
