RE: Tubby & Recruiting
Was at the gym tonite where my kid works out... A local kid that is a junior... Really good player, works out there too. I said would you play for Tubby Smith? He said "whos that". ? I said new coach at memphis... He said Yes! I said what about Pastner... He said "no... Anybody but him, i dont like him". Proves the point... Local kids want to play at Memphis. Just not for Opie.

The local talent coming up in the next few years will be special. If he can pull the majority of them and get them to stay here, which shouldn't be too much of an issue, we should be ok. The only question if is he can.

^ This.
Unfortunately it has never worked as a recruiting model. A possible plan is to get the local kids and then find a Larry Kenon to make it all work. Or, do what Cal did and find good players and not rely on Memphis kids.

what about the '84-'85 team?

Well said and what Tubby and our fans both want to happen I think. Tubby can close out his career in style here.

Tubby can make the NCAA's with 3 one armed players and 2 broom sticks.

I like the prospects of what he can accomplish here, even if he doesn't land top 5 classes every single year.

Yes to this.

Kinda late in the game for a litmus test isn't it?

Hoping for the best, but expecting saviors from grad transfers is thinking like CJP. I hope we keep Moore, but it's a longshot and flipping a HS kid ... he's gonna have to be disenchanted with where he committed for some reason.

Bobby Parks was from Middleton, Keith Lee from West Memphis, and Derrick Phillips from St. Louis. Doom Haynes and Andre Turner were from Memphis. Other guys from Memphis filled the bench and helped out. Its hard to sell the Memphis guys to be the backup.

Get the top one or two from town every year and the rest from out of town. Its the University of Memphis not the University from Memphis.

You're not trying to sign Skal.

You've got roster spots and playing time.

700 transfers, 100+ are grad and immediately eligible and only use the schollie for next year.

No one is expecting a Final Four roster but jeebus, there should be SOME expectation that they can cobble together a roster.

It's not August. The second signing period JUST started.

Don't be willfully obtuse.

He obviously meant the Final Four team.

Every meaningful player was from Memphis except for Lee and you can see his high school from the downtown bluff.

Definitely. Not everybody can understand it if they have always lived in a world where people who look like them are always in charge. But yeah, it definitely means something to some people.

Fair enough. I'm confident that Tubby Smith can at the very minimum cobble together a roster.

I'm most concerned about our guard play and shooting, there are a lot of folks here who think we have some guys in the backcourt that can be pretty good, I hope Tubby can make them more productive than PASTner did.

Shooting is at a premium.

Hopefully they can find a guy.

On the other hand, Jeremy Hunt shot 1000 jumpers a day the summer before his senior year.

The current guys can improve with reps and hard work.

It's also the Big 12 the top basketball Conference in America. This year's class is lower than the Tigers AFTER Moore de-committed.

What's more important is that Tubby beat ranked teams with that roster & made the NCAA tourney while our coach had difficulty making the tourney with top 10 recruits.
