MyBB Tubby & Recruiting
Quote: “Recruiting has changed a lot over the years. It’s not like when you had to be on the road for 21 straight days. I know what you’re saying but that’s why you hire a good staff, 'cause they identify who those players are. And kids are narrowing it down a lot quicker, so you’re not recruiting the numbers. We’ll get involved with some of the best players in the country and we’ll do a fantastic job. The fire in the belly is there. . . . I can fight and recruit with the best of them.”

RE: Tubby & Recruiting
You know this was discussed at length during the hiring process.

From Tubby's perspective, the whole point in taking our job is so that you can recruit more elite players and build a final 4 caliber team.

He knows what talent is available here if he wants to go get it. It helps attract other outside talent too that want to play for a winner.

He took the job, so this is clearly his plan.

Get the top Memphis kids, fill in the roster with 3-star regional/national talent and coach em up over 3-4 years. If he does that, we will make a run...

Yep. This is why I wasn't too concerned with the hire, he can coach his ass off and it really won't be hard to land some great guys from our own backyard to help make a run.

There are many talented kids in this area that still grow up wanting to play for the Memphis Tigers, their home team. Give them reasons why they should follow their dreams and they will stay here. Have a competent coach who is an x and o guy in place to maximize their talents on the court and we'll see good days yet again for the program

Having a guy who can talk about what it's like winning a national title can help sell that vision to recruits.

We have been talking about this all day long around the house. The city of Memphis will produce at least 1 4* and 4-5 3* players every year. Someone who is a great coach and developer of talent could field a very good team every year with that kind of talent.

Wasn't impressed with Gary's overview of his potential staff on the show today. He needs a talented recruiter. He does not have that at Tech right now.

Lawson and 2 Tech guys is cause for concern, especially for the anti-Tubby crowd.

In a month to month in a half we will know everything about this staff.

We'll either look up and see 5-6 commits that make sense - Moore JCs grad trans high DI trans maybe flip a HS kid etc - or look up and see a class that is a head scratcher that fans try to talk themselves into liking.

Well said and what Tubby and our fans both want to happen I think. Tubby can close out his career in style here.

Tubby can make the NCAA's with 3 one armed players and 2 broom sticks.

I like the prospects of what he can accomplish here, even if he doesn't land top 5 classes every single year.

Great thing about Tubby is he can turn fools gold into gold.

Of course he will need to land some talent, but he has a history of overachieving with whatever talent he has.

Hard to see a Tubby Smith struggling to recruit any talent at Memphis.

This recruiting thing is the only thing that concerns me. Especially since it doesn't look like any major enhancements are being made on the staff. I'm pulling for him though and giving him the benefit of the doubt. He deserves a shot.

Vince Taylor is really the only solid AC he had at TT. I hope he brings him and no other.

Unfortunately it has never worked as a recruiting model. A possible plan is to get the local kids and then find a Larry Kenon to make it all work. Or, do what Cal did and find good players and not rely on Memphis kids.

as long as he keeps Lawson, I'm good...Lawson can recruit Memphis, and get down and dirty with the AAU folks/handlers and such.

Would love to see him secure Moore, and if Fisher wants to come, bring him on as well. Try and get some late guys or some Grad Transfer bigs and we have really decent roster to build on.
