Basketball officials aren't really done by the league. These officials work multiple leagues. The guys you see on a Monday may be working an SEC game on a Wednesday.

If these clowns work an SEC game on Wednesday it will be their last.

It's the stupid NCAA rule change honestly. A huge emphasis has been placed on calling even the slightest fouls. We played an exhibition earlier with like 54 fouls called.

Both teams were in the double bonus with 12:30 left in the second half.

True, referee's in college basketball is one instance where we can't claim the mid majors get the short end of the stick. Karl Hess calls games pretty frequently in Boone when he isn't pissing off the Heels, Devils, and Wolfpack.

I get that and saw it coming when I read the rule changes and areas of emphasis. Still, the slightest brush by a defender was whistled and several calls were either very late or called in anticipation of contact. That said, congrats to Southern on the win. This past week Ga. State beat Southern, we then handle State only to lose to Southern.

Can't tell you how many times we've had TV Teddy Valentine in Boone.

We got out of Boone with 2 wins tonight. Not bad even if it took a miracle for the men to win.

RE: Week 5 of Sun Belt basketball (Mon, 1/25 thru Sun 1/31)
The new rules for college hoops have basically killed my interest in the game.

GS miracle win aside, this was an absolute embarrassment to the spirit of the game. Even worse, it's far from the first one I've seen in the last couple of months.

Honestly, I don't think there's a single game this season that GS has lost where I'd say that the refs were the primary mitigating factor... But that's only because horrible calls have been so ubiquitous that I don't think anyone can blame refs since they dole out so many calls for and against both sides EVERY FREAKING NIGHT.

Tonight's GS-APP game had just shy of 60 fouls called, and - despite any 'rivalry' status - it wasn't a chippy game at all. The same could be said for the GS-USA game from a couple of weeks ago in Statesboro. No hard fouls and maybe one technical between two teams who don't even know each other, yet both teams were tiptoeing down the stretch with multiple players in serious foul trouble due to soft calls.

The epitome of this year's clueless officiating came in that GS-USA game on calls that came within five minutes of one another... At one point, a USA guard picked up his dribble as he crossed the 3-pt arc. He jumped between two defenders, landed, immediately lost the ball, dribbled to regain control, and then kicked it out for an open 3.

Later, a GS guard also started driving to the hoop. He was hacked hard from his right side just inside the arc (no call) before being hacked from his left side around the free throw line (another no call). Having picked up his dribble and taken two full steps, he then took a third step, straight into the chest of a set-up USA defender who was a solid two feet outside of the little semi-circle under the hoop.

And... you guessed it... of course it was called a block and two shots.

Can we divert some Homeland Security or NSA resources into robots that can actually understand and implement the rulebook?

The foul on the three was absolutely a flop. Official with a clear view didn't call it buy the one on the other side did. I saw a Snapchat with a good view of it.

The refs were the same ones that were scheduled for Saturday. The one who made the call at the end was the sane one from a game earlier this year that lied about giving App a bench warning before calling a bench technical.

We blew that game, but the conference should be embarrassed by those refs. They were all-time bad even before the end.

Does the Sun Belt even make officiating assignments? I forget how basketball officials work, I just know they work multiple leagues. Seen several of our refs calling SEC games later in the week.

As for the play itself, why was your guy even close enough for a flop to even be possible to begin with? Georgia Southern kid is shooting from roughly half court, Just stand there, without jumping, hands up. If he makes it, great shot, if he doesn't you win.

No the league doesn't assign the refs; a regional assigner does.

Agreed. In fact, he should never have even been allowed to shoot. We didn't deserve to win, the way we played out the game.

You do realize the NCAA mandated they call the game per the rule book. That means you either foul or watch players blow by you unless you have great position. Many officials have skirted the mandate as the season goes along. I don't know if any individual call is wrong unless I am paying particular attention to the play involved, and even then the zebra position is superior to mine.

And he is calling your game differently? I mean why would he? I'm unclear on what your reference to ACC teams is. Did he stiff you against one of those teams? Were you not playing a fellow SBC team?

A couple of SLC coaching legends square off again this Thursday when TxSt plays Louisiana in Lafayette. So far Marlin has had the better of Kaspar. So far so good, and that will continue on Thursday.

No, he's calling games horribly all the time. I guess he's not as well known in Louisiana, but Karl Hess is probably the most controversial ref in the country. Actually got banned from reffing ACC games starting this year. I was just piggybacking on the statement that refs call games by region, not by conference. Not really sure how you got any of that from what I said.
