Fun little nugget. App is flying into Troy tonight on the Hendrick Motorsports corporate jet. Then they're taking the 10-minute flight to Mobile after the games tomorrow (the jet is going to Mobile anyway) and flying back Sunday.

Basketball officials aren't really done by the league. These officials work multiple leagues. The guys you see on a Monday may be working an SEC game on a Wednesday.

True, referee's in college basketball is one instance where we can't claim the mid majors get the short end of the stick. Karl Hess calls games pretty frequently in Boone when he isn't pissing off the Heels, Devils, and Wolfpack.

And he is calling your game differently? I mean why would he? I'm unclear on what your reference to ACC teams is. Did he stiff you against one of those teams? Were you not playing a fellow SBC team?

No, he's calling games horribly all the time. I guess he's not as well known in Louisiana, but Karl Hess is probably the most controversial ref in the country. Actually got banned from reffing ACC games starting this year. I was just piggybacking on the statement that refs call games by region, not by conference. Not really sure how you got any of that from what I said.

Cajun Express argues for the sake of arguing with everybody possible. Don't read anything into it.

Basketball officiating is the worst and has been for a long time.

Maybe baseball can come close. It's simply a matter of how frequently the same officials see the same schools and how closely players and coaches interact with them.

I have fond memories of certain basketball officials who are persona non grata at Hanner Fieldhouse.

I read a Pat Forde column yesterday where he said that the rule changes in college hoops were doing great and helping make the game better.

I was like 01-wingedeagle

But when I got further into the article, he mainly said that the 30 second shot clock was good, but that the additional emphasis on calling fouls was showing mixed results so far.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/forde-minut...ncaab.html

"A shorter shot clock and a renewed emphasis on actually calling fouls were the primary initiatives designed to speed up games and free up offensive players from defensive assault and battery."

"It seems clear that the 30-second shot clock is working"

"Less effective thus far are attempts to clean up the sport via calling games more tightly"

Honestly I think they should have gone the other way and let them play. So tired of all the ticky-tack fouls and game stoppage (even before the rule change/enforcement). I don't know why teams (like GS) don't just drive for the basket every time and draw the foul. Especially if your team can actually make FT, bonus is you also get the other team in foul trouble (kinda like being on a yellow card in soccer, you don't play as tight/aggressive and give the opponent more space).

I think the emphasis has been on fouls away from the basket or for guards as there seems to still be plenty of contact in the lane with the larger folks.

I'm trying to figure out how calling more fouls will speed up the game.

When I think of lousy, biased refs, I think of one name. Max Chauvin.

Confirmed, Arkansas State will only have 7 available players tonight. Yes, that means if 3 guys foul out, we're finishing with 4 players. Also, we're starting a walk-on at shooting guard.
