Obviously the answer is winning involves more than talent.
Again there are several SBC teams with more roster talent that AppSt, and GaSo, and that should be evident from looking at the last 4 year composite recruiting rankings.
Again, the people that selected the preseason all-SBC have no problem with the fact A-State has more talent than the other SBC teams.
Again, according to A-State coaches, the local media and their fans the only reason they were not in the championship hunt last year was they had a devastating number of injuries that really impacted their DL, and as a result they suffered embarrassing loses to AppSt, and TxSt. Thats it, nothing else.
They did not played GaSo, and most feel ULL was simply the better team, and was favored to win that game.
They have not lost to a SBC team this year.
They should be 3-2 at the very least, and attribute the loss to Mizzou, and the poor performances against Toledo, and USC, to extremely poor performances by their qb's (mostly by their backup qb who is ranked last in espns qb rankings).
IMO if they get even decent play from their qb they have a very good chance of going undefeated in SBC play. They certainly have the talent to do so.
