RE: OT: The Official Video Game Discussion Thread (E3 Is Here!)
I don't know if it's that I've seen more footage/interviews, but I can't imagine becoming sour on No Man's Sky.
I personally like the idea of not being tied down to "missions" whenever I am on a journey through intergalactic space. I think of the way I play GTA. I just like running around, causing chaos, and exploring. The actual missions are boring to me.
The fact that you will have no idea what or who you will come across at any given time (hell, the developer's don't even know) is pretty exciting to me. Will it live up to the hype for some people? I doubt it, but the developers (particularly the one they have going around pitching it -- Sean Murray) is doing an exceptional job in attempting to manage said hype. So if it doesn't live up to your (not you in particular, BearcatMan, I am just speaking hypothetically) expectations, that is on you.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love the thought of a full scale exploration type game like that, just wouldn't mind a contextual framework more than just the drive of sharing discoveries. The fact that showing any aggression at all will get you on a kill list for that system is interesting, but could unintentionally make the game boring for some people. The scale of this game is pretty hilarious though...I read somewhere that a comment made by Murray at E3 was that if there are over 2,000,000 users playing this game at one time, you would have a .000002% chance of encountering another player by randomly selecting a system and traveling there.
I was more speaking towards the delay with which it has been moved into full production. I'm worried it's going to be a 3-4 year things...that's what I'd be soured on. Here's hoping they are just waiting to announce a near future release date on European sol (at Gamescom) or something.
RE: OT: The Official Video Game Discussion Thread (E3 Is Here!)
Wow... no mentions of the Final Fantasy 7 relaunch?
I guess I am more of an old school gamer. Theme Hospital was my jam in college, and I still play it from time to time. SimCity 4 was amazing too. Never really got into the FPS games, with exception of GoldenEye 007 back in the day on the N64.
I made the mistake of buying The Last of Us Remastered right before having our first kid, so I am only about an hour into it, hopefully I can find some time to get back into that soon.

LOL, yeah. The other day, I was dividing 18 quintillion into 1 million, 5 million, etc., and the results were cracking me up.
I don't know if you've seen this interview, but they discuss the release date (or reasons lack thereof). I think they are closer than you think, it just boils down to fine tuning and not working against the pressure of a deadline.
Skip to 12:45. I tried time stamping it, but for some reason, it's not working on here.

Yeah, the numbers for this game are astounding...exploring every planet would take something like 86 billion lifetimes, so there's a significant chance that a majority of planets in the game won't be seen by anyone lol.
I'll have to watch that when I get the chance, I saw videos with IGN and Kotaku, but never checked the Gamespot stream.
Side point, but have they said if there would be a player locator feature yet? A lot of people are wondering that, because I know I'd like to explore with friends but if you only know that they're playing and not WHERE they are, you could be looking for the next few years just finding them.

I don't think it's a game that is meant to be played with friends, which I think I prefer. I like the idea of if/when you ever come across someone, it is this epic moment given the vast unlikelihood of it ever happening, rather than groups of people just warping to one another.
Quote:“People keep asking us about multiplayer and I think when people see this they are going to fully realize what it means to be that far away from somebody else who’s playing,” Hello Games boss Sean Murray told GameInformer.
“People keep saying to us, ‘Yeah, but what if I knew where they were? Would I go there?’ And it’s like, yeah, but they are going to have to stay there for quite a while while you get over there. And then once you get over there you might land on the same planet and then you will say, ‘I’m on a planet the size of Earth and I am on a mountain. Where are you?’ Which is, I know, a weird thing and it’s a daunting thing.”

That's my issue with this game. 18 quintillion planets sounds cool and all, but I do want to see how locating other people will be handled. From what I've read, it's an like a MMO, but spread so far out that it's basically a single player game.
I can imagine if there is not some in-game friend locator, the community will create subreddits or web pages for certain planets so that people can actually play together and congregate in certain areas. Overall, the game looks awesome, and I hope there's a beta we can sign up for.

True...I guess it's just so different that I cant wrap my head around it yet. I'm big on exploration type games, so I'm sure I'll like it, I just want it to come out and for it to stop being a sizzle reel for a conference every few months.

Ugh, that sounds exhausting. trying to fly for 30-60 minutes (or more) just to find another person would probably kill a lot of interest after release. Then landing on a planet and flying around some more to get to your friend!?!? I do enjoy exploring in games, but jeez. This sounds pretty amazing and pretty crazy at the same time!
RE: OT: The Official Video Game Discussion Thread (E3 Is Here!)
I don't think we have enough information to fully understand all the travel systems, but given that Murray has stated the odds of running into a single, random player is 0.000002% (given 2 million players), I think 30-60 minutes to find a friend may be off by a factor in the tens of thousands, if not millions.. or billions.

Completely forgot about Ghost Recon, I really like the direction they are taking there, open world with individual missions with multiple completion angles seems like it could be really fun if done correctly.

I mean, we know they've got procedurally generated freighters/battles playing out in some systems, but they've got to have some sort of NPC generation, even if it's not 'people' in the general sense. The sentinels that were in the gameplay video are a start, but I'm thinking other NPC explorer ships, if planets had outposts/establishments or something.

I can't say Nintendo's was exciting and great...it did justice to Star Fox and Mario Maker that everyone already knew about but the new/fresh titles like Paper Jam and Triforce Warriors were nice and all...but, to be a showcase event, they didn't do a showcase game.
Honestly, the Smash direct on Sunday with all the Amiibo and Smash DLC announcements was much better and epic that the E3 presser felt like a let down.
Could you imagine if that was announced on Sunday though....the holy trinity of crazed gamer heat-dreams all coming true in one 7 hour period, the internet would've just given up.
RE: OT: The Official Video Game Discussion Thread (E3 Is Here!)
I downloaded Warframe back when it was free on PS Plus and I just started playing it today, and I just wanted to say that I would definitely shell out 20 bucks or whatever for it.
