the cinci game was ugly, but i can't remember it being a beatdown i think the score was 3-0 at halftime and grothe was playing his worst game of the year. i think a problem with cinci is there's no real identity to the team except its gritty team defense. no one player you can really write stories about, like grothe and his recent espn article. last i checked the qb situation was still up for grabs although i always liked gruntza. plus we have cinci at home this year so i think the advantage goes to us, playing in the cold has not been kind to our team see uconn 2 seasons ago.

There's not much to argue from around 1988 on either. No comparison really. One started booming and the other just recently hit the bowl scene. Both can still improve on their current spots.

You are probably aware that politics have always played a large part in who goes to bowls. It probably used to be much worse than it is now. I'll give you one season as an example of a Memphis team that SHOULD have gone to a bowl game, but didn't....

The year was 1963

Mississippi was coming off undefeated season in 1962. The Rebels had finished 1962 10-0, won the Sugar Bowl and won a share of the National Championship.

Memphis was coming off an 8-1 1962 season. Memphis' only loss in 1962 was a 21-7 loss to undefeated Mississippi.

Memphis and Mississippi start the 1963 season playing to a scoreless tie against each other.

Mississippi goes on and finishes the 1963 season 7-0-2.

Memphis finishes the 1963 season 9-0-1. One of Memphis' 9 victories is over Mississippi State.

Mississippi State finishes the season 6-2-2 with that loss to Memphis.

Come bowl selection time 7-0-2 Mississippi goes back to the Sugar Bowl. No argument there.

However, 6-2-2 Mississippi State (who lost to Memphis) is invited to the Liberty Bowl in Philadephia.
Memphis (9-0-1), who tied Sugar Bowl bound Mississippi and beat Liberty Bowl bound Mississippi State, doesn't get invited to a bowl game.

That's a little history lesson that explains why I say you can't simply add up the number of bowl berths a team has had against another and say that's why they are better.

Bowls have always been about who can bring most fans or name attention, nothing has changed except for the fact that we have more bowl games
