Gregg Marshall's regular radio show has been cancelled for tonight, @knssradio announced. Read into that as you will

FWIW, Pastner still hasn't done is obligatory end of the year presser. It was tentatively scheduled for last Friday. Didn't go down.

(03-30-2015 01:26 PM)Tygrys Wrote:  Conference affiliation is being dramatically overhyped for basketball hiring. As long as the NCAA tournament is around, it really does not matter what conference you are in, especially if you are coaching at a school like Memphis, in a solid multi-bid conference. here is the hypothetical... Marshall comes to Memphis to be the head coach and continues to coach at a high level (multiple deep NCAA runs) and then 5 or 6 years from now the P5 breaks away and Memphis is left behind. That is worst case scenario supposedly what makes any P5 job more attractive. Do you really think there will not be multiple P5 schools lining up to hire Marshall? Some of you all are acting like he is going to get blacklisted in the future if he were to choose a place like Memphis over a P5. Get real, for the time being he will go where he is the most comfortable where he has the best chance to succeed, so long as money is relatively the same. This is not football, the SEC does not give him a leg up into making the NCAA tournament...

I disagree completely with your point about conference affiliation. For at least this century, we have been out performing our mid major tag, largely thanks to Cal's shenanigans (harsh, but fair) in the coming decade this over performance will not be an option financially. You do make a good point about a successful coach being poised to jump on the P5 helicopter if they start breaking away, but you also have to assume that the more established guys, would rather not move their families around forever, and successful coaches in P5 will still be able to rise up inside the P5. So again, we are going to be looking for a Fuente type hire, nothign wrong with that at all...

And no, this isn't defeatist. It is recognizing that so much has changed in college sports that the field isn't remotely level and we are on the wrong side of the divide. Blockbuster had a long and storied history of being a very successful company, until the game fundamentally changed on them.

who gives a crap? it's the SEC, and Bama has proven they will pay whatever it takes (see Saban's 7 million a year)

Huh?

I would think a coach interested in a place he could win would care.

Money isn't the only thing that matters to these guys.

How many times do I have to say SEC for it to get through?

They are, we aren't...end of story...I think you don't understand the reality of our situation...P5s will always win that fight going forward.

But you go right on thinking a coach like Marshall would come here...

Sounds like miserable talk to me...

This is what cracks me up when people say that "Pastner haters" are miserables. Those using and old Cal term are typically the first to make sure and remind us how lowly our University is...

We could luck out and get Marshall or another proven hire, but the reality is that Johnny Jones would have had the job if Cal doesn't pull the trigger. We also got turned down by all of our targets last time.

That puts the scoreboard at Kirk, Finch, Tic Price, Johnny Jones/Cal and Pastner. There are a lot of hires that look great on paper that don't turn out, and a lot of flat out bad hires.

Even more reason to make a move while the iron is hot. Illinois let Weber go a few seasons too long and they aren't even remotely relevant now. They had been the #1 team in the country a few years earlier, but now they are in a world of hurt. I feel we are directly relatable job wise. Our year too long has a good chance of being next year.

lol, our Iron is not even warm...

Well no one is exactly going to accuse you of plagiarism, but that is exactly what was implied by saying our "iron is not even warm."

He's done a lot of good, but the time has come for memphis & CJP to move on

I think that is a very respectful and accurate way to put it. I think that Pastner's tenure at Memphis will be more fondly remembered in the future than it is now. He kept Memphis relevant and created high ethical standards. Regardless of his basketball coaching ability, those are important attributes that aren't as easily found as many think.
