who gives a crap? it's the SEC, and Bama has proven they will pay whatever it takes (see Saban's 7 million a year)

Huh?

I would think a coach interested in a place he could win would care.

Money isn't the only thing that matters to these guys.

How many times do I have to say SEC for it to get through?

They are, we aren't...end of story...I think you don't understand the reality of our situation...P5s will always win that fight going forward.

But you go right on thinking a coach like Marshall would come here...

I never said Marshall would come here.

I'm just not going to declare the Alabama basketball job better than Memphis basketball job purely on conference affiliation.

If the SEC is all that, why did Frank Haith leave Missouri for Tulsa? Oh, he was on the hot seat. Okay, why'd James Franklin leave the SEC for the Big 10, why'd Urban Meyer?

Why couldn't Tennessee hire anyone better than Donnie Tyndall?

Being in the SEC, they should've been able to throw money around last offseason and hire whoever, right?

I'll grant that Texas is a better job than Memphis (not on results, but on potential), but will not grant Alabama the same courtesy. They could throw 10 Million at Marshall, but until FB season is over it won't matter.

I'm not saying Alabama is a bad job (money talks and the SEC is on upswing), but to flat out say it's better than us feels wrong / incorrect.

For what it is worth, I don't think either Bama or Memphis would get Marshall. I really believe he'll be the new HC of the Texas Longhorns.

Conference affiliation is being dramatically overhyped for basketball hiring. As long as the NCAA tournament is around, it really does not matter what conference you are in, especially if you are coaching at a school like Memphis, in a solid multi-bid conference. here is the hypothetical... Marshall comes to Memphis to be the head coach and continues to coach at a high level (multiple deep NCAA runs) and then 5 or 6 years from now the P5 breaks away and Memphis is left behind. That is worst case scenario supposedly what makes any P5 job more attractive. Do you really think there will not be multiple P5 schools lining up to hire Marshall? Some of you all are acting like he is going to get blacklisted in the future if he were to choose a place like Memphis over a P5. Get real, for the time being he will go where he is the most comfortable where he has the best chance to succeed, so long as money is relatively the same. This is not football, the SEC does not give him a leg up into making the NCAA tournament...

This is what cracks me up when people say that "Pastner haters" are miserables. Those using and old Cal term are typically the first to make sure and remind us how lowly our University is...

He has the attitude of someone who thinks the football landscape has anything to do with basketball. Tell that to the Big East about how football affiliation runs the show in basketball.

Alabama's previous head coaches (going back to 1960):
Hayden Riley- 1960-1968
CM Newton- 1968-1980
Wimp Sanderson- 1980-1992
David Hobbs- 1992-1998
Mark Gottfried 1998-2009
Anthony Grant 2009-2015

1 Elite Eight and 8 Sweet Sixteens in that time.

Not exactly an incubator of elite coaching.

Alabama basketball has the same problem hiring a good coach as our football team.

We could luck out and get Marshall or another proven hire, but the reality is that Johnny Jones would have had the job if Cal doesn't pull the trigger. We also got turned down by all of our targets last time.

That puts the scoreboard at Kirk, Finch, Tic Price, Johnny Jones/Cal and Pastner. There are a lot of hires that look great on paper that don't turn out, and a lot of flat out bad hires.

Even more reason to make a move while the iron is hot. Illinois let Weber go a few seasons too long and they aren't even remotely relevant now. They had been the #1 team in the country a few years earlier, but now they are in a world of hurt. I feel we are directly relatable job wise. Our year too long has a good chance of being next year.

To clarify, Gregg Marshall did not cancel his radio show for tonight. It was tentative, and did not get placed on his schedule.

I respectfully disagree with you on this one; conference affiliation is about to make a HECK of a difference.

Remember the hoopla about Tigers not getting a charter on every road game? That's because we're in a conference where the shared pool is so low, there's not enough to go around. Remember, we aren't getting the promised Big East $$$; members were frustrated that we "settled" with ESPN instead of pursuing a slightly more lucrative deal with FS1 or NBCSN.

Throw in the pending "Cost of Attendance" numbers for athletes that will soon pass (AAC has already said that member institutions will pay just like P5 schools), and planning for future budgets is showing RED.

But a P5 conference that's flush with cash - and remember, they are JUST NOW about to see the mega-bucks - Chartered flights, New practice facilities, higher-paid coaches (which typically mean the best coaches) will be heading there.

There are new waters ahead, those ramifications we are just now beginning to see.

The Pastner hire has not been a "bad hire". I look at it as more of a "serviceable hire".

He's done a lot of good, but the time has come for memphis & CJP to move on

Agree with the first part 100%.

On the second part, I think he gets next year to prove whatever he needs to prove.

The heat got turned up after this season and rightfully so - it would at most major DI schools.

How he handles the pressure, finishes recruiting/hiring staff, and coaching next year will go a long way into whether he stays or not.

I do not think you are actually disagreeing with that much. I agree that is going to as well, but not for a couple of years... The chartered flights would 100% be there for the right coach, do not kid yourself about that. Hopefully, people see that less revenue on ESPN is better than a little more revenue on FS1 or some other station. Remember all those great Big East games this year? Ya, I did not see any of them either...

It's just going the way it has always been going.

The BCS started in 1998 and folks said watch the divide grow in the next 10-15 years.

Well, here we are 17 years later and the divide is as big as ever.

P5 doesn't mean anything really - the ball was set in motion almost two decades ago.

I agree - Austin is a great city. I was just relaying something I heard, I think on Parrish's show, that Marshall wanted to move his family to a smaller town (not a whole lot out there smaller than Wichita but Tuscaloosa qualifies). To clarify I would take Austin over Tuscaloosa any day but that's my personal preference. Mr. Marshall's preference may be different.
