What is crazy is they want to see more single family housing.... as of the 2010 you have 1,600 vacant housing units in a one mile radius of the stadium. That is basically 1 in 5 in that mile radius. They don't want to deal with their own problems first, but they want a say on how this is going to develop.

Reality will hit them hard. They also do not represent the majority of residents in that area. The lady quoted in the AJC saying she wanted grocery stores like Whole Foods and amenities like Virginia-Highlands was particularly hilarious.

Most of the people at a neighborhood meeting in intown Atlanta are the gentrifyers. One person quoted is a resident since 1997. These are not the folks who grew up around there and attended Maynard Jackson High.

A development team and Georgia State University officials got an earful Tuesday from residents near Turner Field, with many asking the partners to shelve conceptual plans to transform the stadium area until a neighborhood planning effort can determine what the community wants.

Taylor told more than 100 residents in the standing-room-only crowd that his group does not have a deal to buy Turner Field once the Atlanta Braves leave for Cobb County, nor does he know when or how the property will be sold.

The Turner Field property is controlled by the Atlanta-Fulton County Recreation Authority, and a sale is not likely until after the Braves leave. The new ballpark is expected to open in 2017.

After the Braves leave? So the earliest possible deal would be November 2016?

Any Panther fans here to to this meeting?

PantherGirl attended. Described it as chaos. People screaming and shouting at Carter and GSU. Pretty typical intown neighborhood meeting. "Change Bad! Kill Them"

LOL

You would think a neighborhood that has seen baseball, football and Olympics would want to keep events in the neighborhood. What are they complaining about???

Carter and GSU are bending backwards playing nice but the facts are that without a big player as anchor nobody is touching that parcel. And nobody is building single family housing. This is happening and some people better get used to it.

Yeah, unless the neighborhood is able to lure a bigger developer who is willing to invest in the property to the extent GSU will, their complaints and foot stomping don't matter. Georgia State will still get the property and proceed with it's plan. They should really keep it in perspective and be grateful for the opportunity to even have conversations with the developer. Mayor Reed has stated publicly that he fully supports the GSU plan.

There are plenty of other low cost housing options nearby they can move to. I got a nice tour of these areas on my recent trip to a concert at the amphitheater in Atlanta.

Not sure I understand what all the fuss is about. You currently share a neighborhood with the Braves, for the positives and negatives of that. They are leaving town, nothing you do is changing that. In its place you have a university wanting to have athletic facilites, baseball, football and all the development that comes with that, positives and negatives. Seems like it is a pretty even swap from what you have to what you're getting....

Uneducated people make the dumbest arguments I guess. Not sure if I'm the one uneducated or the people in the neighborhood.....01-wingedeagle

The Georgia State plan also includes student housing and single family housing... along with a grocery store. So no, the land won't be empty 80% of the year.

Will not be empty at all. But I have a feeling that bureaucracy will slow down the process. GSU and Carter sure are playing nice though. Both the Braves and Falcons have structures built already over neighborhood objections.
