I haven't looked at the plans on-line but assumed they would have to add additional parking to accommodate folks attending sporting events.

So they plan to build baseball diamonds after the King dissolved the Park Commission and ended the softball leagues. Good call.

It ain't for the park commission league. It's for folks from out of town.

Sounds like they are taking a big chance. Check out the story on the town in Arizona where the Super Bowl is being played. They are about bankrupt due to moneys spent on stadiums.

So basically thousands of parking spots would go away in order to build the retail/commercial buildings? So basically there will be enough parking for 15,000 people to go to a game. Awesome.

What organization is going to scheduled tournaments in midtown when you have better facilities out east and in Southaven. Tigerlane sits right smack on top of what used to be American Legion fields. Several other field in the fairgrounds were also removed.

Remember every TDZ dime that goes to these not needed facilities is a dime that will not be going to cover Libertybowl upgrade and Tigerlane debt. Which means the U of Memphis will have to cover more and more of that debt. While the LBC and SHC do not pay a dime to cover the debt.

So the city went and spent need dollars to extend Young into the fairground and according to the picture it will now be eliminated. Have to ask just who's pockets are being lined in this deal.

Why should the city consider the needs of Tiger football? We have already demonstrated we don't have the means or will to fight city hall. They can do whatever they want. They will continue to do so until we take control of our own destiny. That doesn't mean every thing they want will be something bad for us, but it doesn't mean they will all be good for us either.

All a TDZ does is route SALES TAX dollars back into that project, instead of going to Nashville for them to decide how it's spent.

That's not ALL it does. It also generates revenue that will be invested in the fairgrounds area that could be invested directly in the University area instead. A TDZ could just as easily be used to build on-campus facilities.

RE: Fair Grounds TDZ
This is a call to arms I received from a Midtown group I am involved in regarding a meeting this Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 6:00 at Circuit Playhouse:

There is a very important meeting everyone needs to be aware of, regarding Robert Lipscomb and the city's plan to demolish the Mid-South Coliseum, Pipkin Building and spend $233 million to redevelop the fairgrounds area. Many of us have been meeting and discussing this issue and are pretty much of a single mind that it lacks any detailed planning and is a grand waste of taxpayer monies, supposedly to be paid off by increased tax revenue in the TDZ area which not only includes the fairgrounds, but all of Cooper/Young and Overton Park. Here is a link to the plan as it was introduced in Sept of 2013. It's 88 pages long but very interesting reading if you can plow through it.

http://www.memphisdailynews.com/Editoria.../16755.pdf

Both Mayors, Shea Flinn, Myron Lowery, as well as Jim Strickland have been invited.

Wed. Jan 28th 6:00 pm at Circuit Playhouse. Hosted by Taylor Berger and moderated by Kyle Veazey of the Commercial Appeal.

What is suspicious to a lot of us are the fact that all kinds of excuses are being made to keep the public or its representatives out of the Coliseum to actually see what condition it is in. I think we are being sold a bill of goods that it has deteriorated to the point of being unsalvageable. Hogwash! There are many uses for that building that would benefit the neighborhood and all of Memphis.

This will be a 30-year investment.

You can bet a whole cadre of people stand to gain financially from this half-baked plan. The adjoining neighborhoods are not happy about these plans. This should be quite an entertaining meeting, if nothing else. Come out and enjoy the fireworks.

Can we not just plow the whole area into an urban farm or big empty green space. At least that way, we wouldn't lose any city money.

Don't worry, they'll steal that money from the city workers too.
