As a fan I can understand not wanting another state school in the same conference. Now as someone who makes money off cost vs rewards I see UL-L as a home run for Tech over a Umass or GST or Txst...
You are swapping out bus trips with a lot of down and back with costly plane trips and overnight stays. Not just football and basketball but all of those Olympic sports that cost just as much on travel as your basketball team.
Easily a hundred thousand (maybe even two) you can spend somewhere else. Then you also have the addition rewards of 5,000 @$20 or more in the stands for a football game...another $100,000 you will make, not counting the average of $5 off each one of those on concessions so $25,000. Add 2k to a basketball game @$20 (including concessions) and you have another $40,000
By the time you finish look at the cost of travel east or Texas and the gain in attendance when playing UL-L you could easily be talking about 2% of the Tech budget. Not to mention a easy travel game when you are on the road. I can almost guarantee one thing if La Tech was against adding UL-L and CUSA added another school that added cost to the Tech budget...
the next time you go to the state needing something a million here a million there. It will be brought up that La Tech had the chance to cut cost by a few hundred thousand but blocked it.
Then let's just add Murray State and WKU can experience the same thing
(j/k. I couldn't resist :) )
I was about to jokingly say the exact same thing! Great minds...

ULL will likely bring under 2000 fans to Ruston next year, and that is based on many years of history when we were in the same conference. Especially after what happened in Lafayette this year.
And Tech's travel would be no worse than what is was in the WAC with Hawai'i, or even in 2012-2013 with Seattle and other Pacific time zone destinations.
If ULL is considered as the best choice available, the best decision is to stand pat at 13.

Murray State is a GREAT idea! Strong basketball program and they are only two hours away from WKU. Think of all the money the Hilltoppers could save!!

Good points but I would bet that Ark St is just as close to Ruston as ULL and they bring in a new state for the conference

As a fan like I said I understand not wanting another state school...
but I can also see the rewards saved and earned. Each of us are one part of the conference so what's best for the conference might not be best for our school. But if the choice was school A that added another plane trip with overnight possible two over nights for most of the conference or school B that might not be the best for "my" school but cut cost for most others...
School B should be the addition
If Western fought to keep Murray St out you can bet the farm more than a few state law makers would bring it up and try to use that as a reason the next time Western needed money...
they did for many many years when Western left the OVC

right? attendance and dollars off that will suck also.
So you don't think you're recruiting against UL-L right now?How many recruits a year do you think you are getting in head to head vs UL-L because they are in the SBC? Point me to some facts on that.

But is ARK ST as good for the conference? yes they get 26k to show up for a football game...
with a few thousand discounted or freebie tickets. I know ASU fans will disagree with that but look at the numbers and ASU is making less off 26k than Western is of 18k in the stands. With about the same ticket prices.
No way will ARK st draw as good as UL-L for a game vs Tech. Plus basketball at UL-L is head and shoulders better at UL-L.
I fully understand where Tech fans are coming from and none of our opinions will make any difference on which team gets added. And I'm not just trying to throw UL-L out there to get under Tech fans skin.
Looking at the schools talked about...football and basketball UL-L just makes more sense. Which is probably good news for Tech. It probably wont happen. Personally I would take USA over UL-L ...
just for the gulf coast and beaches :)

Murray State plays FCS football.
So they are not a CUSA target.

And you can't figure out the difference between the two? Western keeping out a Murray and UofL keeping out Western. Surely you can.

Not yet! We could stay at 13 until they were brought up like Charlotte or ODU.
I think they would be a great addition to CUSA. WKU could benefit from increased attendance and have a travel partner built in with an existing rivalry; win win!
Murray State to CUSA 2016!

Tech's WAC travel was not bad for the first 4 years when Rice, SMU, UTEP, and Tulsa were still in the conference. That left only Hawai'i, Fresno State, San Jose State, Nevada, and Boise State. Tech and Hawai'i didn't play in football for 2001-2002.
New Mexico State replaced UTEP, so that was a wash travel-wise. But Rice, SMU, and Tulsa were replaced by Idaho and Utah State.
If the ULL game is the "Time Out for Tech" game like NSU was this year, the opponent would be irrelevant from an attendance standpoint. That is the weekend when prospective students and parents are invited to campus. That's a guaranteed attendance bump of 5-6K even if Upper Podunk is the opponent. The extra 3K total that ULL might bring in (including ULL fans) isn't worth the baggage otherwise.
We need to get through at least one football season without seeing the Lafayette Leopards logo used on ESPN graphics for ULL before they are worthy of even being discussed.
Find a better option or stand pat at 13.

We do t want ULL. They would hurt Tech more than help CUSA. Sad to see some of the former belch fans can't let go of their past.

Northern Illinois I'm telling you is the ticket.
1) Chicagoland Market
2) Likely won't get into the AAC anytime soon.
3) AState, ULL and Georgia Southern will always be available.

I am sure those are accurate numbers - especially the last 3

ULL doesn't historically travel well to Ruston and it's about a 4 hour drive.
I like NIU or Ohio. Murray state sounds like a viable option. South Alabama looked like a viable option last night in their bowl game too.

Ok, I pulled that out of my butt, but that's mostly true. C-USA has some appeal.
Memphis drew 33,000, Tulane 25,000, SMU 21,000, and Tulsa 20,000 this season.
I am sure those are accurate numbers - especially the last 3
They use the same measure as everyone else--tickets sold.
Tickets sold doesn't show up so well on T.V. during football games. I guarantee you North Texas puts more fans in seats, and makes more noise during broadcasts than SMU. The small private schools will always face these issues. I don't know why Memphis is included in this argument. But... it is true, in football, UTEP, North Texas, and UTSA generate more interest and fan support than Tulane, SMU, and Tulsa. I really don't see a logical argument against this fact.
