RE: Ebola
The thing is, just think how many people you encounter when traveling from place like Dallas to Cleveland. There are people in the departing airport, people on the plane, people on the arriving airport, people in restaurants that you may visit, and so on and so forth. And each of those people you contact have the same potential themselves for interacting with dozens of other individuals who are potentialially exposed as well. FUBAR.

I don't know about restrictions with respect to healthcare workers in contact with the Ebola patients, but there are restrictions with respect to symptomatic healthcare workers who had contact with Enola patients. Of course, enforcing those restrictions depend upon the vigilance and competence of screeners and security workers at the airport. My suspicion is that going to get much much worse before it gets better.

This is going to sound cold, but our policy of treating Ebola victims in the states was probably shortsighted and is going to cost a lot more lives in the long run.

I have to agree with this... Not sure the policy was bad... but the execution of that policy... Someone didn't plan for many contingencies...

For example, while trying to save the life of Thomas Eric Duncan, now three more people have Ebola.

RE: Ebola
Im completely dumbfounded that the medical staff treating the ebola victims are somehow contracting the disease... don't they have procedures in place to prevent themselves from getting infected? If they do... then they are doing them wrong... there needs to be a level of quarantine for anyone in direct contact with a victim's bodily fluids... ANYONE... medical staff... etc. They must remain in the facility for x amount of days before being released with no symptoms... Its horrifying to think that even our medical professionals can't keep themselves safe when treating the infected...

RE: Ebola
And to think... this nurse... knows she was treating a patient with ebola... was dealing with his bodily fluids and putting her at risk. YET... she has a fever and decides its a good idea to board a plane. Brilliant... just brilliant. If this is the kind of elevated common sense we are dealing with, then maybe that's how she screwed up the handling of the biohazardous materials, thus giving herself ebola...

RE: Ebola
From the various media reports I've read, CDC procedures were breached. On the other hand reports of breaching may be fabrications concocted by the CDC to CYA.

My guess is that medical doctors underestimated the ease of transmission for this disease. I think we're in for a long long scary ride.

RE: Ebola
Why are you folks so worried? According to Susan Demas' recent column the flu, measles and whooping cough are all more deadly and dangerous than ebola, so what's the big deal?

RE: Ebola
Half-assed and stupid beyond belief.

Quote:Supervisors walked walk in and out of Duncan’s isolation room without proper protective gear.

- Duncan’s lab specimens were transported through the hospital’s pneumatic tube system instead of being separately sealed and delivered, and thus “the entire tube system was potentially contaminated.”

- Caregivers donned “flimsy” hospital gowns that left their necks, heads and lower legs exposed, with head-to-toe protective gear not being supplied until Duncan’s second day in the intensive care unit

I don't think our president wants to prevent Ebola from spreading in the United states. Part of his pan African world view is to expose us and make it easier to marshal the resources of this country to address what is essentially an African problem.

I don't even want to read about it anymore. They same it transmits fluid to fluid but how can that be possible if the medical workers have any sense. Either what Ernie said is true or there is more to this virus. Starting to look like a bad Spielberg movie.

RE: Ebola
It's not political. It's a terrible virus and we can't stop it, anything about stopping the spread is total hysteria and bs politicking of a serious situation.

I think people overestimate the medical system. Mistakes and poor execution of care are just a reality, that happens every day. Health care workers are just human, there are workers who are sub par, workers whose husband is having an affair, their kids are sick, they are having a bad day, they are over worked, couldn't sleep last night, the ups truck had a flat tire, who knows what all. Plus it is a new deal, people still learning.

We want everything to be perfect, hello, that will never happen.

RE: Ebola
Reading now that the facility/hospital in Dallas wasn't even remotely prepared. Staff wasn't even brought up to speed on procedures for handling Ebola. Ridiculous.
