Ha, this Memphis fan saw the Dead play at the Fillmore East on July 4, 1970 from midnight until 5 AM, complete with the Merry Pranksters shooting off roman candles in the theater--far out, lol. Top that!
Seriously, Louisville is the poster child for doing everything right in getting admitted to the P5. Twenty years ago, Louisville football had all the prestige of Memphis football.
But Louisville set its nose to the grindstone long term--built the facilities, increased the budget, hired the right people, and voila, worked its way up. The old fashioned way--they earned it.

I hope you make the trip in a few years to check out our new digs. I am convinced that we are using the Louisville model and I would love to hear the impressions of you and others who witnessed the Cardinals' climb firsthand to give your estimate of how far we have to go/what we still need to do.
I like Houston, and I love watching what you guys are doing. I have some friends that went to UH so I have that connection, slim though it may be. You're building an incredible football stadium and am I mistaken, or are you guys spending heavily on your basketball arena as well?
For lack of a better way of saying it, it certainly looks as though Houston's following the same model Louisville did. The problem however is location, unfortunately. Louisville had two legitimate options in the ACC and BigXII as well as sitting in the SEC's backyard (though I don't think anyone believed we would end up there). Houston doesn't have that advantage, unfortunately. You're sitting in the heart of the BigXII but the BigXII looks like it's more interested in dying on the vine than expanding and if they do, I'm not sure they'd look for yet another school in Texas. Joining either the Pac-12 or ACC would put you guys on an island. I'm just not sure where you guys could reasonably go, and that sucks. I really think you guys are doing all the right things and investing in all the right things.

One problem with the city of Houston--if you want to call it a problem--compared to Louisville is the fact that the city is so much larger and attracts so many people from all over the world that have no knowledge or concern about American college football.
And those that do like college football have a built-in affection for UT or A&M, or whatever school they support from their home state, in addition to all the pro sports. Louisville has to contend mostly with just UK which is a nobody football-wise. The Cougars just get lost in the mix.
In that sense Houston is similar to Los Angeles or south Florida. Not much local identity for college sports teams.
But I agree that Houston is doing all the right things. They just need to start winning.

I believe Houston is back to its glory days. I suspect that I will see the old Run Shoot Houston again soon.

You don't have to go as far back as the Run and Shoot. The Keenum/Sumlin teams were as good as anything Strong put together at UL. The Kolb/Briles teams would have given them Hell as well. IMO, you'll see that proven as A&M/Sumlin will keep UT in their shadow for as long as Strong coaches there.
Good luck with Petrino. LMAO

Right now I think you have three strong football programs. They are Cincinnati, Central Florida and East Carolina.
The schools that could be strong are Connecticut, Houston, South Florida and Tulsa. Add Navy here in 2015.
So seven (8) of twelve (12) is not bad.
The needs major work group is Memphis, SMU, Temple, and Tulane.
I really think Boise State and BYU need to court and extended all-sports membership.
East
Connecticut
Temple
Navy
Cincinnati
East Carolina
Central Florida
South Florida West
Memphis
Tulane
SMU
Houston
Tulsa
Boise State
BYU
You might want to reconsider that bolded part sometime soon.

Not until I see a trend of reversal for two or three seasons.
