Tom DIenhart: UConn not on Big Ten radar, locked out of a major conference

I guess, if you don't look at revenue, attendance, national championships, and bowl appearances, then yeah the two are about equal.
Both are in G5 conferences, both play in small stadiums, both have titles in 1 sport albeit different ones(UConn-hoops & UMass-football), both serve the same market(Springfield/Hartford) and both make squat compared to the P5.
Am I missing something? I know it hurts your ego but UMass has just about caught up to the falling UConn.
Haha, this is hilarious.
One sport? First, UConn has 11 National Championships in basketball (men most recently in 2011 and women are defending champions). Second, UConn also has 3 Soccer National Championships (2000 most recent), 3 Field Hockey National Championships (current defending champion), 10 Polo National Championships (including the last 4), and countless Big East championships.
If we are falling, then BC is rock bottom.
BC? Rock bottom? Well, since you want to talk about polo, field hockey, etc, I guess I can mention BC's 6 sailing national titles, or how about BC's 5 national hockey titles? Heck, we even feel that we have a FB national title from 1940 (much disputed, of course)!
Frankly, your response highlights the problem Uconn has, IMO. All of those sports you boasted about mean little to nothing in terms of CR realignment. FB drives the bus - and for that sport, at least for now, Uconn trails BC and SU and most everyone else it needs to be competitive with - and that's what is important.
Sorry, it is what it is.
Just my 2 cents

Hi Husky U...hey, bring it on re: hockey. Looking forward to it.
But before trying to catch BC, you will probably need to first catch BU, Maine, UNH, Wisonson, Minnesota, Michigan, S. Dakota, ND, etc., and everyone else in college hockey who is also chasing BC.
I hope you will chase us. You will be joining the rest of college hockey in that pursuit. That's the reality which the "Alabama of college hockey" has to face. For BC, it is no big deal, Uconn is just another school chasing them.
Good luck!

The B1G has no expansion candidates available that they'd want. So my point stands.
That's not a point, it's your opinion. You don't represent the B10. No one saw them adding Rutgers or Md either...
That's not true. Lots of people realized that both Maryland and Rutgers would be a good candidate for the B1G. Penn State has been complaining about being on an eastern island for a long time, and both Rutgers and Maryland are old Penn State rivals. Both schools also fit the B1G profile academically and by locality. So just because you didn't see it coming doesn't mean that nobody else did.

Hawai'i has been stuck on an island ( literally) forever, and they seem to be doing okay.
I prefer to focus on the positive. WVU isn't in the AAC, and that's the main thing.

Are you crazy? The BC-UCONN rivalry is fantastic for too many reasons to list.
For starters, it's a rivalry of pure loathing. It transcends sports and it transcends national relevance. BC and UCONN could field the two worst ( insert meaningless Olympic sport here) teams in America and the game would still feel like a rivalry game. That's something special.

ACC, B-10 & B-12 are looking at Conn real close
Unfortunately for Connecticut they are going to have a hard time rebounding in football without a P5 tag attached to their name.
Their ability to recruit directly had to do with participating in a BCS football conference. Football recruiting in New England doesn't support strong G5 level programs like it can in places like Ohio and Florida.
Cincinnati, Houston, USF, USF are going to be the good recruiting football schools in the AAC. They'll be the ones positioning themselves for the B12.
For the B1G, the obviously don't care about football strength as they added Maryland so UConn has a legit chance there. The problem is the B1G is the kind of conference that plans long term so it may be 10 years before they feel the need to dip in for more teams. They haven't yet monetized the Maryland and Rutgers additions they just made for the next contract negotiation. By that point UConn will be more established in academics so time is on the Huskie's side with regard to the B1G.
The ACC I don't think is going to expand unless it takes a couple more hits which is possible. In that event, despite BC pushback UConn is going to rate very high on their list. It just depends who is taken and how many teams they need. If they need to add 4 UConn is a lock to join the ACC. The ACC cares more about football than the B1G but the bottom line is you need the budget to run with a power conference. UConn definitely has that going in its favor.
