Crime has gotten worse around Turner Field with one fan murdered last year walking home from the game and numerous robberies and car break ins. Parking has always been a problem too. Although traffic near the new stadium area is already horrendous.

Yep, attendance will improve at the Cobb county site which is only 10 miles from downtown. People from the suburbs just have an uneasy feeling going downtown so that will now be eliminated.

The only concern is managing the traffic with no mass transit.
That's funny. Used to work off Cobb Parkway. Believe me, its just a feeling. LOL

But their uneasiness may get us a stadium

Awesome. Will have to try them out.

While you're there, try one of those Cuban sandwiches. They'rrreee great!
We'll see. Wife is Cuban and I go to Miami a lot. So the bar is set high. :)

Papi's in Midtown is pretty ridiculous. I've not had a cuban sandwich at Buenos Dias, but i can't imagine it'll be better than Papi's
Yeah, Papi's staff is all Cuban. You're getting the real deal.

They better not tear down turner field! That's historic at this point since it was the Olympic Stadium. 01-lauramac2

Can't go wrong at Buenos Dias with the veggie quesadilla and some plantain chips. Wash it down with the Jarritos of your choice, and top it of with tres leches cake. Simple and never the wrong choice.

EDIT: Well, I sold myself. Headed there now.

For starters you can add me to the list of folks that were blindsided by this news, there was some brief talk of the Braves not renewing their lease around the same time the new Falcons stadium was coming together, but I honestly thought it was just posturing to get the badly needed revitalization to the area surrounding the Ted.

Now first let's look at 2012 ticket purchases for Braves games...

This should increase our attendance and we'll be decreasing capacity, that alone will make our gameday experience much better. We should also finally have retail and restaurant/bar options in the area surrounding the stadium.

I understand the concerns(cost, 75/285 is a cluster **** as is, no mass transit) and I probably would have preferred the revitalization of the Ted, but I'll take a brand new stadium and the problems that come with it over the status quo. We have over three years to make necessary changes to infrastructure, I think this will ultimately prove extremely beneficial, though I recognize how strange it will be having seen both my Braves and Falcons play in three different home stadiums before turning 34(well Braves before and Falcons just after anyhow).

Your probably right... Cobb county has always been a very nice area. The area around the Ted was scary. And downtown Atlanta is boring compared to Midtown and Buckhead. But land up there isn't cheep. Just sucks seeing them leave Atlanta proper

Have you guys tried Havana Restaurant off Buford Hwy.? That's where I go on occasion. They are Zagat rated and have received multiple local awards as the best in Atlanta.

I agree. It looks good empty. I should know, I've seen it on TV empty multiple times when the Braves are playing. 05-stirthepot

RE: GSU opportunity for a near campus stadium
This is a great move by the Braves. The majority of their fans come from a swath across the north side of town, basically Cobb through Gwinnett. I get free tickets with a parking pass whenever I want and yet I've only averaged two games a year the last few seasons because it is so much work to get down to the Ted. Traffic won't be any better, but it will be significantly closer.
The Braves are 20 plus years away from being out from under their current TV deal that is woefully undervalued in the current economy. They need to average more fans, but, more importantly, they'll have a stake in the mixed use area around the stadium. This will give them additional revenue they'll need to be competitive.
Baltimore is a great example of what they have in mind - a collection of bars, restaurants and attractions ringing the stadium to make it an all-day entertainment area for visitors and locals alike.
This will be a wonderful move that will make attending Braves games multiple times more enjoyable for everyone.

Braves finished 13th in attendance(31.5k) just 3,500 behind world series champs Boston. We did finish 19th in attendance pct compared to capacity, but that's because The Ted is far too large. We should see at least a small bump in attendance and with the decreased capacity there will definitely be a large bump in pct which will make the crowds more exciting and look better on tv. With a WS contender, I don't think a season sell out in 2017 would be impossible.

Used to go there in high school and college (the original that burned down that is). Its a nostalgia place because it was one of the first places 30 years ago when their were very few Latinos in GA. But best its not. Kool Korners was the best sandwich. Las Palmera's on 5th street in Midtown was the best Cuban food period. Then came Coco Loco. I would rate Papi's the best right now.

The university is campaigning to bring Panthersville(baseball, soccer, softball) closer to campus. If we screw up and don't move on this opportunity, I'm afraid there's no hope for us. The Ted also poses a potential, more intimate football stadium.

Went to Little Cuba on Chamblee Tucker today with my Cuban wife - it's the best she's had since Coco Loco closed.

Coco Loco closed? Wow, wonder what happened. They go back to the mid 80's.

Coco Loco is ( I guess was) what food tasted like on the island in the 50's and 60's.All of the cooks at the Papi's locations have been in the U.S. less than 15 years, plus they lean heavily towards Eastern Cuban cuisine. So understandable that a lot of Cubans may not like it as much as Coco Loco.

RE: GSU opportunity for a near campus stadium
I lived in Atlanta for a while and went to a couple GSU football games and basketball games and I'll chime in from an outsiders perspective. GSU is in a good place with the new Georgia Dome since it will be able to "mask" itself as a smaller venue. Vancouver does this for their MLS franchise and it works pretty well.

It would be awesome if they could keep the baseball diamond, clubhouses, and about 3,000 seats of the TED to keep for GSU baseball and move soccer and track into new facilities in the existing parking area. What GSU and the city could really benefit from most is a small arena somewhere in the range of 8,000-10,000 seats that can host concerts or maybe minor league hockey. Something like Northern Kentucky's arena or the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. The GSU sports arena is a joke.

Given the transportation problem at the Cobb site, it makes me wonder if Cobb will shock us again and create a rail system in the county.
