Does anyone remember this gem? It was about our only sports outlet on Saturdays.

Wide world of sports was sort of like ESPN the Ocho. Covered a lil bit of everything. I miss it.

Funny thing is I bet most of us old guys can quote the opening segment without watching the video.

"Bringing a constant variety of sports"
"The thrill of victory. The agony of defeat. (Skier wipes out on downhill)

This was before cable. Three national channels, a regional or two and a public broadcast station and that was it (all analog obviously). Cable for us came around 1980/81 and added the likes of MTV, ESPN and CNN; it was a watershed moment in american culture for sure.

When we got cable it's amazing that I didn't become a Cubs fan. With WGN showing Cubs game during the days, before lights at Wrigley, I spend many afternoons watching Andre Dawson and Mark Grace.

I was a Cubs fan, before cable, having watched them play a couple times on the 'Game of the Week'. Then WGN came along and I was hooked, even wore #23 in homage to Sandberg. Let's see if I can still remember that 70's infield; Santo at 3rd, Kessinger at Short, crap, can't remember second and I think Pepitone was playing first. Reuschel, Steve Stone, Fergie Jenkins were some of the starters.

It was emotionally devasting being a Cub fan; thank goodness the Marlins came along.

Thanks for posting that.

Anybody invent a time machine yet?

I've sampled enough of today's world to know life was sooooo much better back then.

RE: For those that bash ESPN.....
Thanks for the link. I miss those days myself.

I'm of the opinion more is not always better, same as I believe bigger isn't always better and quantity doesn't necessarily equate to quality. Quite the opposite, many times.

When there were only one or two college football games on a week it gave each game more meaning, in my opinion. They were more special, at least to me.

Now, you miss one game you don't have long to wait. You can watch another in a couple hours. You can basically watch college football around the clock during the season and, much as I like football, I'm not sure I like that much. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life.

Best thing I've done in a while is get rid of all the sports channels on my cable package. Though initially done for financial reasons -- I'm in an industry which is dying a slow and painful death and it's reflected in paychecks -- doing so has turned into a positive.

I spend more time reading, more time working out or piddling in the garden, more time with my wife, more time living rather than living vicariously through the accomplishments of others.

And I do not at all miss the theme to ESPN Sports Center.

Cable is how I become a Braves fan on TBS when they started winning in early 90s...In BG you were either a Mets Fan when they are on Superstation when cable first came out, Cubs with WGN, or Braves with TBS.....

While it might be great seeing a lot of sports you are paying for it....

most people are paying over $1,200 a year. Since we are comparing 1980 to today you could probably get season tickets in the best section for football and basketball still have enough left over to cover the cost of 90% of the road games in both sports....

gas, motel, food, tickets

So lets see who had it better the fan that could only watch a few games on TV but use that $1200 to see most of his teams games in person or the fan of today that gets to watch the sec, big10, acc play on espn?

I think we have reached stimulation overload as a society. Disconnecting electronically does wonders for your soul. I have made it a point to disconnect as much as possible while at home. It has been a Godsend. Like you, I have re-discovered my love of reading, and I spend much more time talking and playing with my kids.

I have become a disconnect, de-digitalization enthusiast.

Statistics say otherwise if you are talking about other segments of society. The 1970's wasn't the glory days of the civil rights movement. Some of us actually lived during that period.

I've never heard it expressed in that way, but I like it. "Disconnect, de-digitalization enthusiast." Thanks.
