RE: OT - Worst Microsoft OS in recent memory
For those who are "enjoying" the Windows 8 Metro/touchscreen/smartphone lame UI .... install classic powershell. It will give you a start menu again.

Only because you are too young to remember Windows 95 / 98. They top the sucktastic list of operating sysytems.

Yep, XP was like a dream after the Crash proned 95/98 systems. Then MS reverted back next several systems.

I started with Windows 3.1. I got a new computer with Windows ME in Xmas of 2000. That pushed me to use Mandrake 7.0 .... and that was early to mid kernel 2.4 in Linux. By the time XP SP3 came out, I wasn't even dual booting with Windows anymore. Windows 95/98 had serious issues, but they made some improvements too. But they're still woefully short of even ancient versions of Linux.

I was looking at a Walmart clearance computer this week that had Windows 7 on it. For that reason.

RE: OT - Worst Microsoft OS in recent memory
Linux turns 22 today with this humble post made the comp.os.minix newsgroup:
Quote:Hello everybody out there using minix -
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)
Linus (torv...@kruuna.helsinki.fi)
PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.
