Although I had some problems with Vista originally, it seems to have stabilized. Win 7 if far superior to Vista. Win 8 is a giant leap backwards.

The Windows 8 interface has become a punchline.

Windows 8 is pathetic. They rushed out an 8.1 to fix some of the slop.

I like Vista, so I'll go with 8.

But, the real answer is "Windows Me"

RE: OT - Worst Microsoft OS in recent memory
Windows 8 no questions asked. Vista was a little annoying, but I could deal with it. Windows 8 mandates that you download 3rd party software just to make it functional.

About two weeks after I got my current computer I decided I was fed up and looked up how to make it act more like a traditional Windows. I downloaded classic shell and set all defaults to programs instead of apps.

Ultimately Windows 8 was a move designed for a changing landscape, but it didn't need to be so at the expense of their traditional PC audience. Just set the desktop as the default start for PCs, put a real start button on there, set the defaults on the desktop to programs instead of apps, and set a different button for the metro interface. On anything else, have the defaults reversed to apps instead of programs and start with metro instead of desktop with desktop being a click away instead.

I stupidly bought Windows 8 without the touch screen....Windows 8 is useless POS. I waste so much time trying to figure out how to do simple tasks. FU Microsoft!

I agree with this. Most problems I ever had were with ME.

(Disclosure, I have Windows 7 and like it. I never liked the look of W8.)

Vista was clunky but it worked. Windows 8 is an unmitigated disaster with a steep learning curve and for the love of God why did they remove the start button? I don't own a tablet but I still don't see how you can do stuff without a freaking start button.

RE: OT - Worst Microsoft OS in recent memory
I fine with Windows 8 now that I've basically turned it into more a classic windows. The lack of a traditional start button to easily navigate and the focus on apps was a big turn off though. Maybe I just don't get apps, but I don't see the advantage of something dominating the entire screen instead of a program you can easily minimize, shrink, move around with other programs, etc. On a cell phone or portable device I get it sure, just not on a desktop or laptop.

I made sure my parent's last laptop purchase was done before Windows 8. My sister is now in the market for one and I've told her to go Mac or buy a clearance laptop from Best Buy that comes with 7 because of the changes in 8.

RE: OT - Worst Microsoft OS in recent memory
I didn't include ME because I never used it. I personally went straight from '95 to XP, and occasionally used '98 in the middle, but I never owned a '98 machine.

I JUST got Windows 8. I needed a computer ASAP and didn't have a choice at the time, so I don't regret it. However, I would regret buying it under any other circumstances. It is truly diabolical. This is the only OS that I have ever hated more than Mac's OSX (Vista is a close 2nd).

My favorite operating systems since the modern era, which I'm calling the mid 90's because that's when the internet started to matter, are XP, '95, 7, and OS 9 (mac). After that '98 was ehhh, and OSX, Vista, and Windows 8 have all been terrible and apparently ME is/was terrible.

^

Windows 7 and Vista are respectable operating systems.

Mac OSX is also one of my favorites (easy for me to say, since I'm typing this message from a MacBook running OSX)

Windows ME was the suck of all operating systems.
Windows XP is easily one of the best.

And yes, that's a write-in vote for Windows ME.
