There are things I could be called that might bother me less than "cracker" but at the moment, I can't think of any.

I said it is becoming common, proof is a African American congressman using the term as a slur. I believe Al (I speak for all black people) Sharpton has used the term more than once. I have heard it used in public by African American youth more than once when talking about a white person.

So three people respresent an entire race of people and their thoughts and views?

Three?

Three, five, seven, the number is irrelevant. The point is that you form an opinion an an entire group of people based on a few isolated occurrences. It doesn't get any more close minded than that. He didn't go out and have conversations, he didn't take a straw poll, he took a few occurrences ran with it. Thats a problem. If that's the reality that you choose then fine. But its a narrow minded way of thinking.

Isolated? That's the point its becoming LESS isolated. The fact that a democrat leader is allowed to make bigoted racial slurs and not get any punishment is the issue here. IF there is a desire to have racial harmony we cannot let a new form of racial biased begin while trying to end others.

Cracker will be the equal to the "N" word when the majority race in this country endures 200+ years of slavery and another 60 years of discrimination on top of that.

Oh yeah, and they have to start calling each other "cracka" for at least 30 years.

Quit crying guys. You can't oppress a people for 250 years and expect not to get some backlash.

Woah, Woah.... Cracker refers to the cracking of the whip. There are no "crackers" left alive today. Except for maybe our political leaders who have become our new taskmasters......

I have not oppressed anyone and the majority of those getting all pissed off have not been oppressed. Is it not time to stop using the past as an excuse for ones current failures?

You may not have oppressed anyone but the past generations did.

You honestly think that a people are going to forget that they were forced to be slaves for 250 years?

Get real.

This is me. However, I don't think that the "N" word and Cracker are remotely equal. I still think that the far, far greater double standard (if that is what some are trying to point out) is the fact that Black folk can call each other the "N" word in every other sentence and "that's ok" but if someone not black is ever heard uttering that word - get out the tar and feathers.

My feeling is that if blacks hate that word (and I wouldn't blame them if they did) - why not banish it for all - just not some.

I agree. Why the double standard? If the word is offensive?..then admonish everyone that uses it.

Or no one. Banning words does nothing constructive.

It's a simple rule. People can use derogatory words about their own people but not about other people. You can call your sister whatever you want, but don't say anything to my sister. I don't understand why you don't understand.

Isn't that pretty much what I just said?

Having said that, why isn't Rangel (public official) not being held to the same standard as Riley Cooper (dumb jock) or Paula Deen (heart-attack inducing chef)?

Cracker is equivalent to the N-word.

I didn't say that.

But just so we're clear, we should assign degrees of offensiveness to various words? Say on a scale of 1 to 10?

I don't want a word police. What I'd prefer is intelligent adults voluntarily choose not to use language intended to incite other people.

Cracker isn't equivalent to the N-word.

Trayvon calling Zimmerman a "crazy ass cracker" was raciest. TM=Raciest.

You are losing grasp on reality.

You have to understand why they say it and why it is okay for them to say it.

The N word was obviously a bad word in American history. However, blacks took ownership of the word and made it a positive word within their culture. Therefore, it's okay for them to say it but not anyone else.

Indiana Jones? He's still alive and a pretty good whip cracker.
