Phil Cunningham officially announced as HC @ Troy
I like what he has to say, especially when he says that he's going to have a lot of emphasis on great recruiting and having a true "team."

Not the splash hire we were expecting, but sometimes these hires work out as great hires in the end.... UL got Hudspeth from a D2 program and he has turned that program around.
I look for a big improvement in the coming years.... He has been ranked as a Top 20 recruiter and that's something our program needs at this time.

Troy Athletics is tweeting a lot of the comments by Cunningham's speech at the introduction right now. I like the things he has to say. But a lot of it is of course coach speak. Hopefully he can do many of the things he says he wants to do.

You got a good one Troy. Just be patient though. if his plan is to recruit freshmen, it'll take probably 2-3 years before you get good results. Then again, he might be the second coming of Calipari.

I sure hope so Apollo. I hope he's also someone that can energize the fan base about basketball because we all know the Troy fan base is much more about football than anything else. We need to be a fan base that's more energetic about ALL our athletic programs. Energetic coaches go a long way in helping with that.

He says he wants some big guys so he can pass the ball inside the paint more. Finally, no more living and dying by the "three."

Perhaps he means that because teaching is at the core of the principles Troy was founded on, and a coach is in fact a teacher, he was establishing that connection. He sees himself as THE teacher for Troy basketball? Just a thought.

As assistants go, this is about as good as you could have done. This guy was ranked one of the top 25 assistant coaches in America when he was at Mississippi State. A year or so under Ray Harper could not have hurt I would add.
I think you guys will be happy with him long run.

RE: Phil Cunningham officially announced as HC @ Troy
I hope Phil gets rid of Troy~juco~ST and turned the program into something the next coach can build on. Every program needs that right mix of JUCO's and 4 year players which hasn't been the case at Troy.
The money Troy put in the basketball arena is a good start to building up the basketball program...the next step is to build a fanbase. That will take winning, which is very possible in the "New" SBC, and it will take some 4 year players that fans can connect to and grow with.
It's obvious, at least to me, that Troy still isn't fully behind basketball by this hire, that's why I said build it for the next coach. Again to me Troy went cheap with the checkbook or they wouldn't be hiring the asst coach from a SBC school. Troy may have a great coach..I don't know. But to me they went the cheapest way possible.
At some point if Troy is serious about their basketball program..that will need to change.

I wouldn't just call him an assistant from a SBC school. He only spent 1 year at WKU. He has been at Miss st for the past decade.

That's kind of insulting to WKU.
At any rate, playing devil's advocate, WKU until recently went with assistants as coaching hires too. And our last couple of assistants were not as seasoned and in many ways not as promising as Cunningham.
I don't think it is fair to expect Troy to throw a bunch of money after a head basketball coach before it is proven that they can sell the basketball tickets to pay for it.
