RE: NBR: FCS Jackson State wants to build $200 million domed stadium
Jackson State has been talking about building a new stadium for a few years now and they've been talking about this multipurpose facility for a few months. The schools wants to move its football games on campus (now they play at Veterans Memorial), basketball games will be played there, and it would also house the athletic department offices. If any FCS school could pull this off it would be a school with the athletic following of Jackson State.

I think what MB is saying is that Veterans Memorial Stadium is in a better part of town (by Millsaps College) than where they plan to build a dome; somewhat the opposite of our argument that building a stadium in a nicer part of Birmingham will bring more people to watch the games.

Most HBCU arent exactly in the nicer areas of town so a great majority of HBCU fans arent phased by that.

Legion field is a poor home field for UAB because is is obsolete compared to the modern facilities around the country, its not because of the community.
Legion field is just not attractive when compared to more up to date facilities that aren't located in residential areas.
Legion field is one of the safest facilities in Birmingham on game days.
Now like GreenHornet33 said, if it can be done by FCS, then Jackson State, Boom!!!!! can do it.
Sorry Hornet, Jackson State does equal BOOM!!!!!

More power to them if they can get it done.
If we had a modern stadium on the LF site, there would still be some griping about it, but the vast majority of us would take that in a heartbeat. The only way it could be better than that is if it were built on campus. Jackson State thinks the same, and proposes to build on their campus, which is where it properly belongs.

No, the vast majority of UAB Fans would "NOT" take a modern stadium on the Legion Field site. That is ubsurd, preposterous, ridiculous, ludicrous, senseless, and "unacceptable". Oh my gosh, what are you thinking?

I hope that somehow, Jackson State accomplishes this mission. One of my all-time favorite football players (the late Walter Payton) played there.

Legion field is just not attractive when compared to more up to date facilities that aren't located in residential areas. Most definitely true!!! If it were so "iconic" and "historic", why are there so few tenants there and it's not even good enough to be part of the Super 6 annual rotation, which further hinders recruiting efforts on behalf of UAB Football. Just a matter of time before the BBVA Compass Bowl runs up against it, in spite of the very nice turnout for the previous installment, it won't be enough to cover up the glaring inadequacies of this place.
Legion field is one of the safest facilities in Birmingham on game days.Partially true, but the bombardment of negative perception and dependent upon individual experiences (I was caught up in 3 separate "jackpots" in many visits there for games), just overall digust with the place for everything from rude, obnoxious treatment by park personnel, police officers, third-rate concession service, or victimization/encounters with insidious elements in the surrounding area, make for a lot of good reasons why UAB should not be playing there anymore and should have a place of their own on campus.

Count me with the OCS>anything off-campus crowd.
The amenities at Legion Field and its environs have been hashed out ad infinitum (thesaurus, hell, how 'bout a little Latin?) but the fact is, it's immaterial.
I want students to be able to walk to a football game. I want alums to tailgate in the shade of a place they helped build, in sight of other things they helped build. I want every dime of revenue to go into UAB's coffers. I want to never be treated like second-class citizens by people taking my money again.
I want to play football where we play basketball, baseball, softball, and sand volleyball; on campus.
A state-of-the-art facility on Legion Field's footprint or in English Village isn't going to make me feel differently.
