RE: NCAA not quite done with UNC Academic Scandal
Anyone with a degree in African & Afro-American Studies from UNC-CH has a tainted degree from UNC-CH. Those with other degrees from the university, I'm not so sure. But then again what exactly does one do with a degree in African / Afro-American Studies or Woman"s Studies? Other than going on and getting a Ph D and teaching at the college level, not much I suspect. Basically I guess you can say you have a college degree and get some sort of unrelated employment that requires or prefers college graduates. Also related to the topic, I have a co-worker who's daughter graduated from Carolina and played a non-revenue sport for them. She took a couple of classes in that department and actually attended classes, took tests, and wrote research papers. They weren't freebee classes for her. She graduated with a (I think) degree in biology. So I suspect if you could do the work you were probably expected to, if you couldn't you got the help you needed on a case by case basis. Now that is just my guess.

And today it might just get worse for UNC. One of the key findings of the report that tries to isolate the athletic department has not only been discredited, but now removed from the report and the firm that did the investigation has ties to the former NC Governor that would indicate he tried to steer the investigation away from the UNCAA.

Quote:Martin had said athletic officials and academic support officials raised questions with the Faculty Committee on Athletics about courses in one department that were supposed to be lecture courses but never met. But eight members of the faculty committee told The News & Observer’s Dan Kane no such concerns had been raised.

Quote:Raina Rose Tagle, a partner with Baker Tilly, said last week that the evidence did not support Martin’s conclusion that the Faculty Committee on Athletics had heard concerns.

Quote:Jay Smith, a history professor at UNC, has another view. “The importance of this event cannot be overstated,” Smith wrote in The Herald-Sun of Durham. “The validity of Martin’s interpretation of UNC’s troubles as ‘not an athletics scandal’ hinged on the anecdote about the FAC; the discrediting of that anecdote undermines the interpretive thrust of the entire report.”

Quote:But the evidence also is overwhelming that the academic support staff, which at the time effectively reported to the athletic department, knew these classes did not meet and steered athletes toward them.
