He's interviewing Paul, a freshmen, in what might be his first radio interview. Hook just kind of walks him through it, asks good questions, and Paul does an great job. When I listen to other homer announcers in the MAC, they just don't have what Hook has. He's like Erie Harwell, makes it sound easy. We're lucky to have had him for so many years.

I've been listening to Robin on the radio since I was about seven years old. Still amazed at how he brings a game to life. We could not ask for a better representative of WMU.

GBL continues to disappear for weeks at a time. The team would loses significant practice sessions while GBL is on his sabbaticals.

I dont have the time or patience and cant afford the pay cut.

But my premise for coaching was simple: players play. I taught. X's and O's were alot less important. Teach someone to fish and they can feed themselves.

Not complicated. On offense. Is that your name on the ball? Is your last name Wilson or Spaulding? I didnt think so. Pass the darn thing and quit trying to express air out of it by dribbling incessently.

Lots of drills where dribbling wasnt allowed. Put a premium on player movement and helping out your teammate. No one wanted a 5 second call so they made sure they weren't the reason for someone else getting one.

Defense: Played a "game" I learned from Jerry Sloan when I worked with him between his coaching gigs in 83 and 84.
Cutthroat!

You scored so you could play defense. 1 pt for a basket regardless of from where. 2 pts. for every stop. 3 pts if you got a charge. Faking it brought a blow of the whistle and your team was off D and out.
First team to 15 won and didnt run sprints.

I never had a team, ever, that opposing coaches didnt come up and repeatedly ask, "How in the heck do you get them to play so hard?"

We always played in transition too. Be it a two man drill or 5 on 5 scrimmage. D get the ball they always are rewarded with the opp to go in transition until the ball was scored or they lost it.

Would drill the kids where when a whistle blew, the O had to toss the ball to the nearest defender and everyone sprinted into transition.

I liked running a motion O because it eventually lead to the end of the season where we were literally unpredictable to the D. Started out with a couple motion patterns that emphasized 3-4 rules pertaining to passing, dribbling, screening and movement without the ball. They were incorporated into the pattern but it always evolved into free lance where we just needed to utilize the princples.

Kids like Tava and Paul were my dreams. Kids who "felt the game". Not always the most gifted athletically but with or without the ball 2 passess ahead of most others.

Here's a pop quiz.

Who's fault is it that a person to be screened gets "over" the screen?
- The person who the screen is set for?
- Or the person setting the screen?

It is always the responsibility of the person rubbing off the screen to rub their man off that screen. It is never the screeners fault. Even if the screen goes skinny, sideways or even does a head stand and spits nickles.

Screener moves to make up for the screenee and you get a foul.
The screened person should be forced to go under or chase the screenee.
Goes under, they get hammered by both the screener and his defender.
Or the screenee can "fade" to the open space on the backside.

Chases? He is always behind the screenee who should be able to catch and shoot or curl and drive.
If the screeners D cheats into the passing lane as the screened chases, the screener goes straight to the bucket at full speed to catch for lay up.

Simple principles that can be done in a 3 man, 4 man or 5 on 5 game.

Lol this is comical

RE: The Official Broncos Vs Eastern Gamethread!
Random thoughts...postgame...

*We got outrebounded at home. I was slightly alarmed by that stat, however, I quickly reminded myself that EMU had about 5 offensive rebounds on one possession in the second half that was capped by a Glen Bryant jumper. Eliminate that possession, and it's basically even on the boards. However, it got me to thinking...when was the last time we got outrebounded at home??? January 11, 2012 when NIU came to town. The Broncos pulled out the win, but lost on the boards.

*I wish Hawk would have gone to the full court press for a stretch in the second half. They had problems with it before the intermission. It would have been nice to roll it out after the first media timeout in the second half. Just to see if they could adjust or not.

*Bench was shortened to basically 8 guys last night. Pace of play wasn't an issue. Taylor Perry seems to be getting the short end of the stick with David Brown being back.

*Watching EMU on offense is painful. They run the 3 man weave at the top of the key until there are 15-18 second left on the shot clock. Then they run a play. I don't know why Murphy insists on doing this. Syracuse doesn't run their offense that way.

*It's very evident that EMU is loaded with athletes and players. I found myself wondering how they would do if they played man to man defense and tried to run.

*I thought Derek Thompson tried to do a little too much for EMU on offense. He's a talented player that will give lots of MAC teams problems going forward. I expect him to play much better when we return the trip in a few weeks.

*Darius Paul came up with some HUGE buckets down the stretch for us.

*Tava played really well last night. 5 offensive rebounds. A couple really nice assists in the second half. And 2 great hustle plays that got him buckets at the end of the first half.

*Shayne was quiet on the boards, but he still ended up with 14 points. He had his work cut out for him against Riley, who is a legit 7 footer...and then Balkema who just threw his body around. Such contrasting players. I bet those two hold Zeke Marshall to 8 points or less when they play Akron.

*I'd really like to see Tava, Paul and Shayne play together when we face EMU again. Throw Tava in the high post and let Paul run the baseline. We had multiple guys open on the baseline but couldn't get them the ball because EMU is so active in their zone. Most of the time it was one of our guards. Throw Paul on the baseline and you can make that pass over their defenders. He can catch and shoot 10-15 jumpers all night long before the defense can guard him. Tava can run the high post and Shayne can do his thing on the blocks.

*David Brown made some real nice hustle plays. He struggled shooting last night. I thought he forced a couple 3 pointers. I'll take the bad with the good though. He wasn't going to continue his red hot scoring pace.

*I don't think Klein did anything bad during the game that warranted him getting 9 minutes. Rather, I think Richie stepped up and made some plays. He got a couple steals and assists...then hit two baseline jumpers in the second half. The pace of play didn't warrant some of the guys needing a prolonged rest.

*We went 16/21 from the free throw line. It was the difference in the game. With limited opportunities and possessions, we have to hit free throws to beat EMU. We did last night. Hopefully we can do it again.

*Gotta hold home court if we want a top 4 seed in Cleveland. We did that last night. It wasn't pretty...but I'll take it. Now we need to steal a few road games.

*Chips are this weekend. Already looking forward to it.

I remember them attempting one again in the 2nd half, but it turned into a transition dunk.

But I agree that the one in the first half was huge. Completely changed the momentum in the game.

Slightly O/T.

I noticed Persky tweeted about Bishop Robinson being at the game last night. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but he hasn't been to many games, if any, this year. I remember seeing him multiple times last season. I'm guessing the lack of interest from WMU has kept him away.

However, I am wondering if EMU has their eye on him?????? Hence his presence at the game.

Very possible.

EMU coaches were looking at him hard during AAU season.
