(01-03-2013 02:27 PM)Mothership Wrote: TV deal for next season and beyond - The Big East football has a contract for 2013. C7 doesn't. I would find it highly improbable that the C7 would address this with any of the remaining Big East schools.
Depends. If the C7 are going to start their new league in fall 2013, then they need to start negotiating their own TV deal for 2013-2014 pretty soon. But if the C7's new league doesn't start until fall 2014, then there needs to be a basketball TV deal for the final "holdover" year of the Big East.

As a UH alum and supporter, I hope we and SMU go to the MWC. I have no desire to play anyone left in the nBE besides Navy, SMU and Tulane. That's it. My bet is we go to the MWC. I think the MWC will leave Tulsa and UTEP behind due to the mutual respect/cooperation the MWC and CUSA have had recently. Perhaps the two conferences eventually align themselves. If that were the case, it makes even more sense for the MWC to pursue UH and SMU

it would be as if houston had stayed in c-usa all along, except instead of road trips to orlando, tampa, new orleans, memphis, annapolis, you'd be taking road trips to boise, logan, reno, fresno, laramie, and fort collins

Forget that!!!!
Unequal revenue distribution, far flung low populated regions of the country, low fan supported schools, more deadweight in FB, etc. etc......
I can live with the MWC if it is our only option which at this time it is NOT!!!!!!

RE: Big East Presidents Meeting Friday
The Mountain West is filled with small market, mid major type programs. It required a huge financial concession to get Boise to come back home (1.8 mil to 2.5 mil a year).
If SDSU can't cut a similar deal with the MW I think the odds are slim that SDSU comes back into the fold. The idea that Houston and SMU would agree to leave the Big East (its still called the Big East) for a conference payout of 1 million with remote western road trips isn't going to happen.
Another consideration....Could the Big East answer the loss of Boise by adding UTEP? UTEP is closer to SDSU than Boise State while playing in the Sun Bowl, another potential asset to the Big East.
I'm sure UTEP doesn't feel like the new CUSA makes any sense anymore. The question is would they accept a Big East invite over one from the MWC? Adding UTEP would anchor SMU/Houston in the BE for sure I would think.

I cant see why Houston and SMU wouldnt prefer to play in Florida and the East Coast rather than Cali and the West Coast. The TV money will be better than the MWC, even without Boise.
And there is still a possibility that no one is added to the existing 10 and that SDSU and Navy act as FB only members offsetting each other. Look at it this way, would you rather play in the MWC or in FB a division that looked like this...
SMU
Houston
SDSU
Tulane
Memphis
Cincinnati

The only way they can add additional teams is by letting them sell their games as a seperate pacakge (like Boise) where the schools have to approve the purchasing network (like Boise). That would allow the new schools to sell their rights to networks that qualify for the 300K/500K national TV bonus. Otherwise, I think you are only going to earn about 1 million a year or so if none of your games make national TV. BTW-Some good MW teams may not make national TV just because CBS claims thier rights. If you are on CBS, you dont get the bonus. So, this is not completely performance driven. Some of it is just being lucky enough to not have your best games that might be attractive to national TV get picked up by CBS.

FIFY. SMU & Houston literally have nothing in common with anybody in the MWC except maybe Fresno State & SJSU.

I have realignment fatigue. At this point I have no idea if a single one of those schools will actually be there by next fall. I'd say at least two of the schools in your example have a very decent chance of not being there by fall (I'd put SDSU at about 90% chance of not being there). lol...hell, we might not be there.

MWC in 2013 format (assuming SDSU in MWC) avg attendence 26493, with UH/SMU 23244
BE in 2013 format avg attendence 36200, with UH/SMU 34306
BE in 2014 format avg attendence 31047, with UH/SMU 30107
BE 2013 travel distance for football (as signed on w/Boise) 5128 miles
MWC travel with all away games to most likely division ( SMU, UNM, AFA, CSU, UWy, USU) 4981
its a sad fact but by 2011 stats UH and SMU would LOWER the MWC avg attendence and travel to Boise is shorter then travel to Uconn

How much would Houston have to pay the Big East to back out? Is it $10M? I assume Houston really has no way of negotiating that down. How long would it take to make that back in the MWC?

I believe we have a income clause that will likely kick in if the numbers are as sad as the press is reporting. On a side note, Kustra was asked how Boise's new MW deal compared to what the Big East could offer. He said the Big East couldn't couldnt counter because they didn't have any proposal at all. He said that more than once. So when Aresco said that no network had even talked numbers with the Big East, maybe that was true. On the other hand, he supposedly said the deal would be around 100 million (maybe that's just Arescos's own guess?). Anyway, if we leave now it's 5 million if none of the escape clauses are triggered. If we join, we owe 2.5 million entry fee plus a 10 million dollar exit fee. So we will either leave before joining or we go through with it. We won't join and leave unless a power conference calls. Personally I think we could probably get out on the "losing AQ" clause. The lawyers could argue that the Big East effectively has lost AQ when the other conferences did not. The BE could argue they didnt since AQ was eliminated for everyone, but I think we all realize the elimination of AQ was just semantics. So like everything else, it gets negotiated.
