This is a great hire. Dave Wommack will help take ASU to the top of the Belt along with Freeze's offense.

Nice. Congrats on your hire.
I imagine that it's still Christmas up in Jonesboro just like it is in Lafayette.

Wommack looks like a great hire. I wish ASU the best of luck. It is these kinds of hires that will improve the competition level in the Sun Belt, and help the conference win more OOC games.
Congratulations.

I hope he works out for you guys, but when he was at Georgia Tech he did not field good defenses even though he inherited some really good talent in guys like Derrick Morgan and Morgan Burnett. After two years of steadily declining results he was let go.
He did do well at USM before coming to Atlanta, so maybe he can rediscover what worked for him at ASU.

As I recall, the defenses he fielded at Ga Tech were ranked in the 50's. If he can get us up to that point, combined with our current offense, we'll be ok in the SBC.
Our defense wasn't anywhere close to that last year, and we were a few plays from being right in the mix.

That Tech defense was loaded with talent and had the advantage of an offense that eats clock.
I'm not trying to slam the hire (much). I really like Freeze, but I saw Womacks' defenses up close here in Atlanta and they really underwhelmed.

The guy who replaced him at GA Tech had an even worse defense. ASU isn't asking him to win in the ACC. They are asking him to win in the Belt.

His Ga Tech teams went 9-4 and 11-3. I'll take that.

That's Al Groh, who is installing a 3-4 and did not inherit very many good players.

Who wouldn't. But those records were a function of Paul Johnson's offense not Womack's defense.
Again, I know I'm crapping on your hire but I do wish you guys the best. I just am trying to relate what I saw as he led the defense at Tech.

You may be right....who knows?
But I don't see that bad of a defense from looking at the scores.

They really faltered down the stretch in 2008 and gave up almost 25 points per game in 2009, even with a first and a third round pick starting for them. And for a team that was close to the top in the nation in time of possession on offense.
Again, sorry for the negativity and I'll leave it alone now. I do hope he does better for you than I expect.

RE: stAte hires a DC
stAte is just proud to have a guy at DC who has been a DC at the highest level. Our 1AA assistants had peter principled out. At least this guy has seen how things are done in big time programs.
Freeze likes him because he is aggressive, and will gamble to get that offense the ball back quick.
Any stAte fan who has watched our d bend and break late in games should appreciate the more aggressive philosophy Wommack will bring.
