I agree Bit. The rules are what's to blame 03-puke not the enforcement of them.

Can't say I disagree with your premise. However, rules are rules, and if said rules exist - no matter how freaking ridiculous - consequences are deserved.

Here's the problem. If you allow players to sell awards they earn then the big name schools with big money boosters could use it as a legal vehicle to pay players. Example, say Terelle Pryor wins Sugar Bowl MVP. He wants to come back to school but his family needs some cash. A booster could just offer to pay the guy $200,000 for the MVP trophy and keep the kid in school.

The players should not under any circumstances be allowed to sell awards until after their careers are over.

The 5 can play in the bowl game. They are to miss the first 5 games of next season (4 ooc games but includes Miami FL, Colorado & Mich St). They can appeal with the hope of the penalty being reduced. Since 4 of the 5 players are or will be seniors they can also chose to go into the NFL draft.

Yeah, sadly, that's what's likely to happen.

I don't think it's sad. Those guys made a stupid mistake, breaking a stupid rule, and now they're probably going to declare to minimize the effect of the suspension on their draft status. But IMO this is their 2nd stupid move. With a lockup coming up, these kids may end up not playing in the pros too...

CJ

I guess they're cutting Cleveland State a break since they actually have a good basketball team this year. 03-wink

No, it's the rules and they know the rules. It's one thing to give away your possessions, but to sell them for favors or cash, it's against the rules and they know it. If they want to sell their possessions do it after their eligibility is up. It's not free trade since they're under the jurisdiction of a company or an entity.

I really am not happy with the NCAA . I would have been better with this if they had directly taken money, but they sold things the conference and school gave them (jerseys and conference championship rings). It was their property to do with as they pleased. The schools can literally make millions off them and they can't even sell their own property. Add in the NCAA being insane with Indian mascots and well I wouldn't be opposed to forming a new governing body.

I actually side with the NCAA on this. If they were selling their own car or something else I would be upset. But they're selling things they earned under a specific entity and that entity basically told them that you would be given that but you can't sell it while still under eligibility or employ of said entity. As RealDeal said, what's to stop them from selling a MVP trophy or championship ring to a booster fan for $250,000? It's fine if you do that after your career is over, but doing it while you're in school, well, besides being tacky, it's pretty shady. They're making millions of dollars off of these kids, I agree, but this is just ridiculously shady.

What 'saddens' me is that it looks like another case where one of the 'big boys' is getting away with something. Five games each sounds harsh, but when the bowl and likely going-pro of the better players is considered, it will not amount to much.

It won't amount to diddly. But did you seriously think the NCAA was going to come down on the Buckeyes? If so, you need to need to leave Fantasy Island and get back in touch with reality...

RE: Numerous Ohio St players out for the Sugar Bowl?
Here are the games they'll miss:

Sat, Sep 03 Akron Columbus, Ohio TBA

Sat, Sep 10 Toledo Columbus, Ohio TBA

Sat, Sep 17 Miami (Fla.) at Miami, Fla. TBA

Sat, Sep 24 Colorado Columbus, Ohio TBA

Sat, Oct 01 Michigan State * Columbus, Ohio TBA

I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to buy out Miami under this circumstance.
