Quote:At bottom, the struggle between national Republicans and Democrats is over whether the country will adopt a version of the Texas model, or of the Michigan, New York, or California model.
Doesn't that really sum up the entire debate in this country?

RE: Texas: created 1/2 of US jobs
Yes, mostly true. Property values never bubbled like the rest of the country. Housing has always been affordable. Appraisers are much more tightly controlled in Texas. Real Estate speculators are also not the problem elsewhere. We have a foreclosure problem, but not like the rest of the country. Texas has the largest population of illegals in the country, so schools and hospital cost are huge. 2 years ago, Texas quietly passed a law that allows DPS to require SS#s on Driver License Renewals and proof of citizenship. It's a 6 year cycle. Many are turning to other states and work here with out of state licenses. Some don't drive. But Texas is identifying them. If you are not a citizen, and file for a voter registration card it's Perjury. If you vote, it's a 2nd degree felony. Each instance. With the exception of the inner cities and southern Texas, it's mostly a conservative state.

I'd say generally yes, Torch. It's not as easy as people want to say to simply "be like Texas"... but it is clearly a more entrepenurial state than most

I'd pretty much say yes to both Torch and Claw.
That's why I choose to be in Texas.

Hey, it's damned nice here right now. Got the windows open catching a breeze off the lake.
We're pretty consistently 4 degrees (F) cooler than Houston 24/7/365, and 5-10% less humid. And a nice breeze off the lake probably 50% 0f the time. People ask me where I'm going to retire to and I say right here. Only possibility would be moving closer to San Antonio because of the military benefits.

Don't come to Texas if you are liberal progressive. Don't want them doing to Texas what they did to Washington state.

Why Texas is "Open for Business"...
1. No State Income Tax
2. Right to Work State
3. Fiscal Restraint in State Government Spending.
4. Legislature meets every other year, subject to Special Session.
5. Balanced Budget required by State Constitution.

wmd... Texas also often offers incentives for many businesses to relocate here when it is necessary/prudent.

True, cuts in Franchise Taxes, Local taxes, etc as incentives to move corporations to Texas.
I wish the plan to move Northrop Grumman Ship Systems to Corpus Christi from New Orleans had worked. Instead they went to Mississippi.

Same with Florida! One of the reasons we're better off than most of the country even though we were hit harder by the foreclosure mess.

No offense, but FL receives a bigger share of federal disaster funds when a hurricane hits. That means the poor schmuck in PA, who saw his company relocate to "low tax FL" is now paying to subsidize the company who left him.

NC has 3 out of the 5. It just sucks that we can't adopt 1 and 3. We also offer very little in terms of incentive for investing and it is the reason that Kinston didn't get Boeing as advertised.
If it wasn't for the superior Research Triangle Park we'd be in trouble.

So, if I was to move to Texas where is the best town / city to live? Assume I can work at my choice of oil companies.....
Is Houston my only option? I don't mind small town

I've thought of moving to Texas, staying in NC, and back to Canada. All great options, but you can't beat the amount of house you can get for your money in Texas. North Carolina is about the same, but the Dallas area stone houses are so nice.
