CEO pay isn't tied to stock performance. These golden parachutes. It's sickening.

Actually, the CEO pay that has really gotten out of whack is tied to stock performance. It's the huge bonuses for quick improvements in EPS/stock price. This forces management totally toward short-term expediency instead of long-term real economic performance. Unfortunately, the best ways to get that kind of improvement are (1) to cut costs across the board without regard to the long-term consequences of some of the slashes, or (2) to fudge the numbers. We've had plenty of problems with both in recent years.

Agreement that there is a problem does not constitue agreement that this is the proper cure. If anything, the proposed approach will cause more problems than it will solve.

What would you call the system we have now? It's not capitalism and it's not socialism. It's corporate welfare with the taxpayer holding the bag and the liabilities.

The first thing that comes to mind is clusterf**k, but I don't think that's a generally-accepted economic model.

It's actually probably closer to fascism than anything--private ownwership but with heavy government in planning, down to the micromanagement level. There's an interesting article in the current National Review about how comfortable large corporations are with what's happening, because it will allow them to squeeze out entrepreneurial competition. Big business loves big goverrnment, because the costs of compliance keep out smaller competitors.

You would think this would be something that everyone could gather around on. GG has great mind. Alot of the ideas you read on here have substanbce. But for the life of me......... I don't get how you guys can excuse Bernanke and Paulson. I can see how someone who personally benefits from the situation can be carrying the pom poms, but the excesses we have seen from some of these corporate types is beyond the pale. It's inexusable and WE ALL should be outraged. This idea of socialism is nonsense. The state is not the land owner. We do have individual wealth. The idea of fascism is nonsense. Mach, if you go forward with that attitude, don't be disappointed when there are no jobs left in the USA because there are no employers. We'll all have government make-work jobs but the funny money they pay us with won't buy anything because there won't be anything for sale.

We have some serious structural problems with the economy that nobody--not Geithner, not Paulson, not Bernanke, not Obama, not Shrub, nobody--has shown any indication of addressing. Read what Ross Perot wrote in 1992 and ask yourself--are those still problems today? Are we doing anything to address them? Will these things sink us if we don't fix them?

Right now, the people in charge are so totally clueless that I have no idea what they think they are going to accomplish. Obama's "energy plan" will result in the US importing more oil in 2015 than it does today. Obama's "economic stimulus plan" will produce 20 to 50 million unemployed and 20%-50% inflation. Watch, and remember this. When it happens, you read it first here.

What should we be doing?
1. Let the failures fail. Bonuses won't be an issue then. Yeah, there'll be some discomfort, but we're going to have discomfort anyway, and at least this way it'll be over sooner.
2. Balance the federal budget. As long as the government is sucking so much money out of the economy to finance its deficit, investment capital will be scarce.
3. Get the US back into the export business. This is the only way we can eliminate the trade deficit. This will end the flow of cash overseas.
4. Wean Americans from the me first consumption economy and get us into the business of saving and investing.
5. Put some limits on the Fed, if we keep them at all. Give them one job and let them do it, instead of trying to manage the whole economy. I'd say tell them to keep inflation in the 0-2% range, and if they can do that, then count on other ways to accomplish whatever else the economy needs.

I don't see anything that this administration is doing that will accomplish any of that. I don't recall anything that the predecessor administration did that would accomplish any of it either.

Mach - if regulating CEO pay was a good idea (and I've never been convinced that it was), then why not do it honestly? He's got what he needs in Congress. The only conceivable reason I can think of (assuming that he actually thought a move like this through completely) is that he doesn't trust the American people to stand by a decision like this and he's therefore put it outside of their control. It's as simple as that. Whether it's control of US Troop movements or regulations on the number of Easter bunnies that can be bred on a yearly basis, what is at the heart of a move like this is giving control over decision making to an international body because he doesn't trust the US political system. I know of nothing more damning that's been said of this president.
